I would confirm directly with Lunt before buying if you will in fact get an extra 2mm of in travel versus the stock helical focuser.

Re: Focuser upgrade for my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha Scope

Thanks for the Moonlite focuser info! It will be awesome to have two choices! According to the info from Moonlite: the Moonlite will have about 10mm of focus travel, with the same racked-in distance as the stock helical focuser. By my measurements, the stock helical focuser also has 10mm of travel. ...

Great news! I wonder if the Feathertouch focuser allows the same or more inward focus travel as the stock helical focuser. Guess I'll have to ask Lunt.

Re: Focuser upgrade for my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha Scope

In case anyone is interested, the thread size at the rear of the LS50 telescope tube (where the helical focuser attaches) is M35x0.5. I got this information directly from Lunt. Also, I have heard (don't ask me how I know) that Lunt may be offering an optional "upgraded" focuser for the LS5...

I can now confirm that by threading optical cell #4 a little deeper into the nosepiece, I can achieve focus with all my eyepieces. I purchased a second nosepiece from Lunt for $20. This lets me use the "empty" nosepiece when mono-viewing, and then just replace it with the nosepiece contain...

Lunt LS50 and Siebert Black Night binoviewer

I recently received my Seibert Black Night binoviewers from Siebert Optics (http://www.siebertoptics.com/). I also purchased the Siebert 1.2x OCA that allows my Lunt 50 to achieve focus without over-magnifying the image. I have found that eyepiece pairs in the 15mm - 20mm range work best but higher ...

Re: Focuser upgrade for my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha Scope

I picked up a replacement for my stock helical focuser at Lunt today. It is a huge improvement over my original focuser. The focusing action is much smoother and not as stiff. Also, there is much less "play" and "sag" in the focuser drawtube. I would encourage anyone who is not h...

Re: Newbie here: need your advice on first solar scope purch

I do not think the focuser of the LS50 needs to be a deal breaker. I made many images with the LS35, and that has the same helical focuser. Not ideal perhaps, but certainly OK. One trick is to loosen the screw holding the camera slightly while focusing, so the camera doesn't rotate, or simply focus...

Somone on Cloudy Nights (where I have a similar thread on this topic) asked me: Is it a worthwhile upgrade? I guess it depends on how much you like or dislike the stock focuser. Re: Focuser upgrade for my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha Scope

well, the market demanded an entry level, visual only scope for around 7 hundred dollars. The LS50 certainly beats any competition under $1000 the way it is sold. If they put a real focuser on it like a Crayford or whatever, everyone would be complaining that it is too expensive. I'm not expecting ...

Re: Focuser upgrade for my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha Scope

To anyone considering this "upgrade", you should know that the Borg focuser has a shorter light path by 5mm versus the Lunt-supplied focuser, but it has the same 10mm of travel. So the focus range with the Borg is from 45mm to 55mm (versus 50mm to 60mm for the supplied focuser.). The short...

Focuser upgrade for my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha Scope

I love my Lunt LS50 H-Alpha scope, but I've never been happy with the supplied helical focuser. The focuser drawtube sags with just the weight of the blocking diagonal, and there is some slight back-and-forth "play" in the drawtube. The sag and play can be mitigated by locking the focus kn...

Congrats and thanks for the great unboxing report! I have the exact same scope and really like it. The only weak part in my opinion is the helical focuser, which has a bit of "play" back and forth at the eyepiece end as you turn the focus. Lunt told me it was considered "normal"....

Here is the same full-disk image as above, except with no master bag flat applied (processed identically):

The master bag flat evens out the disk illumination without negatively impacting the prominences, as far as I can tell.
