I'm pleased to see the SW ED80 comes out well.

Re: Noise, Firecapture and imaging questions

Thanks,
I'm running the ASI 174 and ASI 183 on a MSI "gaming " laptop - i7, USB3 16Gb memory and a 1Tb SSD drive.
With FireCapture I'm seeing a drop in fps when I use SER 16 bit setting....
I'll double check all my settings and confirm the impact.

Re: Noise, Firecapture and imaging questions

Just re-visiting this topic.....

Did we find any more info/ data to add to the discussion?

I'm thinking in FC you need to tick the 16bit box to get any of the "benefits" of an SER capture - the frame rate rapidly drops.....

Re: KG3 IR Absorption vs IR Blocking filters? Same?

If you check out the KG3 transmission curve, you'll see it acts as a UV-IR blocker. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Kg3+filter&rlz It looks a good match for 393nm (whereas "normal" UV-IR filters cut at around 400nm and effectively block the CaK.) You probably should replace like with like. Adding...

All the major manufacturers of Petzval design refractors have said there’s no issue using them of solar observing ie with Herschel wedge.

Re: Maier ITF - first failure?!

Valery,
What exactly have you found that the KG3 gives that the Baader doesn't?
As tested with the spectrograph, there should be no issue.

Re: 6Apr - ARIES 214mm D-ERF + C8 + PST etalon testing

Whoooo You're very lucky to be able to test so many PST etalons! In my experience over the past ten years, the PST etalon has a 10/80/10 quality distribution. 10% should never have left the factory 80% are, well, "OK" and do the job - just! 10% are excellent and give tremendous potential for mods. Re: Maier ITF - first failure?!

Gus,
I don't believe there are any safety issues using the Baader 35nm filter as an ITF.
I use the the "big brother" D-ERF version on my PST Mod.......

Re: Maier ITF - first failure?!

You don't need any secondary filters with the Baader.....it gives good cut-off as is.
(I've used the UV/IR KG3 filter on it's own as an ITF......OK but I prefer the Baader solution.)

Just interested... why did you replace the Maier ITF??

Re: Maier ITF - first failure?!

My money would be on a Baader 35nm Ha CCD filter at the front of the blocking filter diagonal.

(No O ring was used in this fitment.....)

Maier ITF - first failure?!

I, like many others, have replace failed Coronado ITF filters with the Maier ITF. Over the years I've been very happy and impressed by the Maier performance. Well, this morning I was presented with my first Maier failure...... The central 40% is "burnt out" - not easily visible from the bright front...

Andrew,
I don’t think the filter combos you’re considering will get you the 0.1nm bandwidth required for effective Ha observing.

PST Stage 2 Mod - Upgrade

I've been using the Borg helical focuser on many PST Mods over the past few years. Very effective, but manual operation. I've just upgraded my Stage 2 PST Mod, which has a front adaptor which allows the assembly to be mounted on the TS102/1100 or behind the SM60/ED80 as a double stack. I also fitted...

New double wavelength filter OIII+Ha

The new filter from Cyclops may be of interest..... basically a Continuum white light with added Ha, 10nm bandpass.
