april fools suns
nothing crazy good, but here's my take, i haven't uploaded in a while and wanted to share. it was noon time so seeing was like looking at the sun through a piece of jello, the ssm was always over 2.3. open in a new tab for full res, they are pretty big, using the asi1600 for wl/cak. i think the 1600...

Re: triple band 2016-12-01
well they are different exposure times, but same histogram levels i tried to run the exact same processing on them in imppg and gimp, but i might not have done a good job, i'm not great with ps/gimp yet alexandra: thanks for cak props, it was able toget a 2.5x powermate on it and not have it look li...

triple band 2016-12-01
been busy lately but wanted to get out since we are lucky enough to have 3 groups of spots right now. i would love an opinion on which set of white lights looks best in your opinion (pedro knows why but he won't tell) also some cak and i got 1 quick ha. the trees make it difficult this time of year ...

100616 -- lots of stuff triple band/fd/spots/pano
tried to really get my money's worth today with our spots and do some triple banding, some mosaics, and some close ups. most of these you should open in a new tab, but especially the bottom discs that are panos. i like most of it, but the white light looks really overprocessed and grainy, even thoug...

Re: LS100 DSll Circular polarizer adapter.
ok so i took your advice and fortunately the hood was collapsible and i was able to put it down as shown below: IMG_20161001_225950.jpg unfortunately, the focus problem persisted. so i bought a different cp, and that did the trick. i guess the polaroid one was somehow crappy (visually they look exac...

large full disc great seeing, close up and a planet
finally got some good seeing today and made this mosaic, they are pretty big, please open them in a new tab for the monster version. i also made a timelapse that is really stable, but sadly really boring :( also, here's saturn. i'm not remotely good at night stuff yet, but it was a productive day an...

092616 fulldisk and close up
nothing special on the sun today, but i had some good seeing finally averaged under 2" for a little while this morning and got a nicer full disc. went downhill by the time i got the closeup going but it's ok. i found the spot activity made me have a much darker disk overall to get the detail out of ...

Re: LS100 DSll Circular polarizer adapter.
also, i was thinking, their rg is really just what we are trying to do with a different filter...if you wanted couldn't you just pick out the thread locker, undo the retaining ring on the black tube's filter and replace it with an appropriately sized cp? it says circular PL on the side, and its a po...

Re: LS100 DSll Circular polarizer adapter.
the good news is i ordreed this and it fit so well that i didn't have to shave anything to fit it in the tube. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007RN5WDS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 however the polaroid circular polarizer i had laying around from my camera kit doesn't allow me to r...

Re: harvets moon iss transit
Thanks, it's probably onlythe 6th picture I've ever taken of the Moon. As I thought about it more through the day I realized this is actually a pretty rare capture compared to a sun transit because the Moon isn't always full and it's also a moving target where is the sun is kind of a steady backdrop...

Re: Animations of Minor Proms... Worthwhile?
ha, we must think a lot alike because i've been doing the same thing lately. after the last awesome prom, i felt underprepared for good settings and procedure for proms especially timelapse so i've been taking them of smaller ones to see how to adjust the gain and gamma to get the best results for w...

Re: Featureless Sun
well the barlow will solve 2 problems at once so its the best option, however you could also try a ND filter (neutral density) or what i use when i do white light is a variable polarizer, they are usually 1-40% and not too expensive. i focus the sun like anything else, it will be completely obvious ...

Re: Featureless Sun
1. to expand on sc response: you will never get a 'real' Ha picture with a nighttime filter, the bandpass is very high compared to etalons (7nm vs .07nm) almost 100x too wide. also to get the constructive interference that makes the views we expect you need two (near perfect) parallel surfaces separ...

amazing as always, but that past few days have been really exceptional for your timelapses. we didn't get amazing seeing here, still very turbulent. you're a master at photographing halpha so i don't want to take away from that...however i'm tempted to mail you my ssm so you can use it and give us a...

Re: 60 minute prom timelapse
thanks with a rare treat like this i should have made an all day timelapse, but i got sucked into trying to grab some spot action as well. this is the first time i've tried to take a decent prom in closeup mode, the balance between gain, gamma, and exposure are very difficult to achieve. if another o...

decided to go for 3 in a row..this was today kind of early before seeing went really bad...my ssm session once again crashed so i have no chart, but it was probably around 2-2.2 average lunt 100 4x PM in retrospect i should have taken off the ds for this i think, and i botched my settings so one 1 p...

all- thanks for the kind words, i am eager to see if the 'winter' here brings amazing seeing since it doesn't get so hot. ga- thanks, but do you think i should have stretched it more and gotten it a little darker? mark- yea i use it with both an avx and a cgemdx i think it is much better on the avx,...
