Re: Back after a tough absence

OK. I got focus at 630 mm instead of 600, I bet that figure is somewhere in that stack of notebooks in the observatory. :) Now I need to readjust the tube length. Front of etalon there? That 630 mm was measuring from front of OG. There's such a bitter wind this morning the wind chill is in the low 2...

Re: Back after a tough absence

Hello old friends, the last few years were not a lot of fun, I had to give up a lot of things; long range target shooting, flying RC planes, etc., but I can still drive. Only during the day. The scope "was" the 60 mm Denkmaier upgrade from some years ago. My sample never worked. could never get a sh...

Back after a tough absence

Back after a long absence, old age BS, eyes heart yada yada; this getting up to 75 is such a crock. Anyway, I can see some now with one eye and I can get around much better, so it's back out to the observatory blowing the dust off things. Got the old NGT 12.5 up and running and now it's back to my s...

Re: Confused

I usually do 60 second captures, which amounts to a little over a 1000 frames.
Then I cull deep.

Re: Well, hello all

Thanks Stephen.
I got my profile stuff changed to the email I use.
I had some big time computer crashes, maybe that happened about the time the forum was changed around.
Anyway, after a really long winter if we ever get some clear sky again I gotta get out there again and get on ol' Sol!

Well, hello all

I've been trying every possible way I could think of to try and get back to the forum.
I used to be JohnM, thought if I tried to register under a different name maybe I could get in and then figure out a way to get my old name working again.
So, anyway, I'm here. :hamster:

Re: Dead DMK41 firewire

Today I'll be contacting the USA service center about my old DMK21. IS in Bremen did give me the name of the person to talk to, including telling me all cameras WERE returned to Germany for repairs. I'm hoping that's not the case and can be checked out and fixed at the US location. One way or anothe...

Re: Capturing with Lodestar SX

Evidently that camera is not usable for Solar work I was just set up with my WL rig to try it out. A couple ND filters stacked in the train and I could get brightness reduced enough to find a few spots. Focus would come no where close and there seems to be no gamma adjustments available. Oh well, it...

Capturing with Lodestar SX

Since my DMK is down for the count I'm cameraless.
I do have my Lodestar which will make captures, but the Starlight Express software is beyond me to figure out for the purpose.
Any one have an idea of a capture program that will run the camera?

And the access hole to it plugged with black silicone.
It can make it very hard to see.

You took apart the PST external etalon?
Hardly recommended.
Easy to damage.

Re: Sudden high camera noise

I was informed this morning that I could send the camera to the US service center but that it would go to Germany for repair anyway. And the only person who can arrange it is on vacation till after Thanksgiving. No idea of what the costs will be and probably won't know till this person in Charlotte ...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

I don't know Mark, maybe it's too much to assume that they know we would be using proper filters.
One thing I still don't understand is if hot pixels across the sensor are adding noise a dark frame won't subtract it.

Re: Sudden high camera noise

Unfiltered magnified sunlight striking a camera sensor could no doubt fry it.
My issue is after selling the AS series of cameras for years TIS needs someone to handle problems of astrophotographers.

Even so I love that little camera and am still thinking about another with a larger chip.

Re: Sudden high camera noise

Stefan Geissler took the job, most here probably know him as the main spokesman/trouble shooter for the DMK cameras. After looking at the photo I sent him he decided the sensor was developing a lot of hot pixels. Then he wanted to know what I used it for and when told for Solar imaging said the Sun ...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

OK, I've succeeded in totally confusing myself. I just did about a dozen AVIs at the exposure times and gamma settings I would usually use. With IC Capture, no brightness or gain applied. Regardless of exposure, the white specks appear at about 90 gamma. Now, did I have any darks I was using with wh...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

Thanks Brian. The 618 has a different chip than the AUO4, don't know if that makes any difference. When I make a dark frame I shoot an AVI at the same settings as the regular capture with the objective covered and then let AviStack2 create a dark from it for subtraction. As soon as it warms up a lit...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

I have a folder full of darks, none show so much as a single hot pixel. I use one camera and things always stayed set up pretty much the same so my darks were simple, for the processing we do a dark is a dark pretty much. I made a new one yesterday for the heck of it, when I saw all the noise when p...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

No changes or updates to IC Capture?

I got it installed and waiting for Sol to find it's way out of a tree it gets in this time of year.

Then I'll go for a capture and see what I get.

Re: Sudden high camera noise

I was able to get out for a while yesterday, my old bones just don't work in that sub zero stuff any more. I got the observatory computer cleaned up and downloaded the latest version of FireCapture. Hmm, this new one is much more complex and harder to figure out than any of the older ones were. Even...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

Lots of digging into problems arising with FireCapture indicates situations where corrupted files have caused strange camera behavior. I suppose as soon as I saw issues with the program starting I should have removed it and reinstalled, but I didn't. It's -10°F out right now, but by the time the Sun...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

I haven't made changes to anything for a couple years. I don't remember if that hard starting of FireCapture started about the time I was getting a lot of noise or not. If things go back to normal after I get that cleaned up and a new version installed I'll know what the cause was, otherwise, it's b...

Re: Sudden high camera noise

I might, but after I've cleaned the old FireCapture installations on that computers drive.
I've always liked it much better than IC Capture supplied by TIS.
