Proms from Oct 21

There was quite a variety of activity along the sun's edge on this day. Here are a few samples (reoriented upright). I used a Lunt 152 for these images. Most of the imaging was done between clouds which didn't help teh seeing conditions. 391a.jpg 348a.jpg 294a.jpg 289a.jpg 454.jpg 454a.jpg 282a.jpg

Prom and AR from Oct16

I debated whether to haul out my c9.25 to try some higher res imaging on the large prom but a very stiff wind convinced me not to be too ambitious and setup my Lunt 152 instead. Even that steup had a hard time with the gusts. At one point, I saw the prom disappearing gradually when the power cord ca...

Re: A very special prom on Oct 10

The feedback on these Ha filters is a good example of why it's so great having people with technical or real world experience on this board that freely offer information. I currently use a 2" Baader UV/IR blocking filter on the nosepiece of telecentric for heat protection for the telecentric and the...

Re: A very special prom on Oct 10

Hi, Skyburner Thanks for your suggestion about using an Ha filter in the optical train. I see that both Baader and Astronomik have a 7nm Ha filter that's ok pricewise. I'm not entirely clear on why the filter should be ahead of all the optics at the back end of the scope. That puts it in a very high...

A very special prom on Oct 10

I didn't have any great expectations for this day since clouds were passing over the sun intermitently. The first setup was my LS 152 + Quark Chromosphere + Blackfly S 3.2Mp (1/1.8 inch sensor). Then I setup my c9.25 with an Aries ERF in front and a 0.63X reducer + 3x telecentric + Quark Combo + Bla...

Re: Decent sized proms on Oct 9

Thanks, everyone, for the views/comments.
I’ve said before that coupling a Quark Chromosphere to a
Lunt 152 is like getting a new scope. If you try it, you will need
a 3.5 to 4.5 inch extension tube to accomodate the new focus
point.

Re: Decent sized proms on Oct 9

Thanks. Marty

I use the Quark to double stack the Lunt 152. If a "double limb" appears, it's the result of separating a single image into disk and prom layers and processing them separately.

Decent sized proms on Oct 9

All images were taken with a Lunt 152 + Quark Chromosphere and Blackfly S 5.1 Mp camera. The larger scale images used a 1.5X barlow. I had a half hour of moderately good seeing before the clouds rolled in. Lou 757.jpg 752.jpg 607.jpg 603.jpg 555.jpg 517.jpg 460.jpg 460-.jpg 411b.jpg

Re: Gorgeous Prom Groups Today, HA 120mm, Oct 7th 2018

Very impressive proms putting on a show and beautifully captured, especially appreciated being under cloudy skies here for the past many days.
Tuesday coming up looks promising and I hope there are some worthwhile features appearing.

First light with Blackfly S 3.2Mp

This camera (Blackfly S, 3.2Mp) was used with a double stack setup I've used only once before, LS80 + 3X telecentric + Quark Combo in back. This allows use of LS80 in a double stack configuration and at full 80mm aperture. I usually double stack the LS80 with an LS60F in front. Because the Quark Com...

Re: H-alpha 30092018, first light asi290mm

Hi, Bart

From the FLIR spec sheet on their website the QE for the Blackfly S (5.1 MP) is 76 at 525nm. The QE of your 290 is stated as 80 on the ZWO site but the
wavelength is not specified.

Re: H-alpha 30092018, first light asi290mm

Hi, Bart The August 15 images were taken at 25 ms (25000µs on the settings for my Blackfly S) with both gamma and gain turned up. I used a Lunt152 + a Quark Chromosphere working at f/25. The scene had bright highlights. The 3 - 5 ms shutter speeds I was referring to were for single PST high transmis...

Re: H-alpha 30092018, first light asi290mm

Thanks, SkyBurner I was very aware of potential eye damage in removing the blue glass. I only do imaging since in my area good skies are very rare. I read somewhere that using 3.8 density solar film instead of 5.0 density solar film results in a 4 f stop increase in light passed and that is recommen...

Re: H-alpha 30092018, first light asi290mm

Hi, Bart Congratulations on your new instrument and great first results. I had some questions about your BF mod and the camera itself. Is the blue glass on the telescope side of the BF1200? I can tell that the glass on the camera side of the BF1200 the glass is red on my BF1200 but I can't see the g...

Some nice limb events from Sept 29

Again plagued with very jittery seeing along with gusty winds and pesky clouds, I set up anyway and pulled these images out of the session. Enlargement will show sharpening artifacts (a grainy texture) and so these are best viewed at low display scale. I used an LS152 in single and double stack mode...

Prominences saved the day (Sept 28)

Here's a full disk mosaic taken with an LS80 on a 6Mp Grasshopper3. Once again, I set up my high res setup with a c9.25 but the conditions were not suitable to produce good images and visually showed sporadic details. The second image is shown below as a sample taken with a full aperture ERF on a c9...

Re: The sun on Sept 23

Used on its own with the c9.25(at 4600 mm), my Quark Combo produces a fairly even but very flat (weak contrast) image. When I use either one of the 2 PST etalons I have on its own, I find the image to be much less even and very sensitive to slight amounts of tilt. Combining the Quark Combo and eithe...

The sun on Sept 23

With no possibility of decent higher res imaging (although I tried), I settled on a full disk image taken with an LS80 at 1120mm I'm continuing efforts to try and find the best double stacking arrangement with my c9.25. So far, I found the best combination that provides decent image brightness is to...
