that's oxidation not fungus starts at edge and works inward
I had same problem
replaced filter

older filters were not sealed at edge and their fate was sealed (no pun indented)

yes basically an image intensifier
I tried this a while back with a gen 2
as long as your careful not to let full sunlight in and burn tube
it doeswork

my version at stellafane simpler no wires and smaller

elongated image needs to be rotated and stretched to make round
initial image is an ellipsoid
