My photos and a short story about outreach...

After having our year-old reservations on the Oregon coast canceled due to price gouging, then getting the news that our place near Portland was not able and hearing about the traffic predictions there anyways, we decided to drive from So. Cal to Idaho and I was able to reserve a last minute reserva...

Re: New here / My eclipse story and images

Great story! It sounded very familiar, nothing but good memories and a bunch of new friends we met camping in Idaho to see it too. Your photos are great, it’s interesting to compare corona photos from different locations.

Cheers,

Anthony

Re: What is everyone going to image with?

I'm just keeping it simple- a white solar filter on my telephoto and my iPhone set to timelapse mode, in wide angle and unfiltered.

Boise National Forest, Idaho. We bailed on our Salem reservations due to the traffic horror stories surrounding Portland.

Eclipse misunderstandings - what have you encountered?

A family member concerned for the safety of my nephew and nieces vision texted me asking if it was safe to take a photo of the eclipse with her iPhone to let her kids see it (by looking at the photo). And, in an Email from the lead teacher to all teachers at my elementary school today, they instruct...

Re: Just kick me! Or "I told you so!"

I know mine are safe, even though I got that email- I bought them back in February way before the cost went so stupid high for them on Amazon. I can't believe some are selling for $10 or more now! We plan on giving our extras out for free to people who need them next weekend.

Just kick me! Or "I told you so!"

Something's working against us, but we will still see it! It's getting over the bumps in the road that sometimes makes the journey so much better! Rented a car at Portland and made hotel reservations at Otter Rock, OR back in 2016- both cancelled. Found a place to stay in Salem, OR but was recently ...

Using eclipse images to capture gravitational lens effect?

Interested in using your coronal images to duplicate Arthur Eddington's 1919 experiment showing light bending due to gravity warping space (as proposed by Einstein's theory of general relativity)? Try this out using your images from the [ED as per Alexandria's good point below] ...day of the eclipse...

Re: NASA Edge - 2017 Eclipse Info, Live Web Cast by Lunt, etc.

Good question, a red-only sensitive camera wouldn't work with Ca-k. The cameras are true monochrome, "RED" is the manufacturer, each one costs about $20K per unit! I've edited original post to reflect that. Thanks!

NASA Edge - 2017 Eclipse Info, Live Web Cast by Lunt, etc.

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov Edit: On August 21st, there will be a live NASA webcast on the link above featuring the use of three 230mm Lunt Solar Telescopes fitted for Hydrogen-alpha, Calcium-k, and White Light. The images will be captured using monochrome cameras made by RED, processed in real tim...

Re: Solar wind buffets Earth's magnetic field

Thanks again, Stewart. I'll have to read up some more on solar magnetometry. It's interesting that you are using a heterodyne bat detector to convert the signal- I used to survey for bats as part of my previous career in wildlife biology before I started teaching science, so I happen to have a few o...

Nice work, interesting observations. What are the approximately 3-hr periodic drops in the "Arbitrary Units" from? Really impressed with your Flickr images. HA mod looks great too! Can you post your magnetometer setup too? Cheers, Anthony

Re: Middleschool science class spectrometer recommendation?

Thanks again for the great suggestions here guys, we are putting together materials to start out simple first and moving up from there. I asked the class to bring in a few cerial boxes, thinking students could work on it in groups but every student brought their own in and most said their parents go...

Re: Lunt PT mod- vibration dampening

Note: I'm now investigating a manual "pressure calibration" pump to do this, they appear to have very sensitive pressure regulation that a PT would require for micro adjustments... I will update this when I get results either way.

Middleschool science class spectrometer recommendation?

Hello, I'm a middle school science teacher and am interested in getting a spectroscope (oops, not a spectrometer) to accompany my HA scope for showing my students. My budget is tight (the HA scope was the majority of it). Any recommendations on good budget units that will show solar spectral charact...

Re: Lunt PT mod- vibration dampening

Hello, Thanks for your replies. I am certainly going to look further into this mod. My idea was to see if it was possible to remove the existing pressure tuner from the OTA body and put a hose between them, but I don't know if it can be easily done. Seems like a separate compressor will have to be a...

Re: Advice on an imaging setup for the Solar Eclipse 2017

I'm a newbie at solar imaging too, but since the OP mentioned watching it with family, I thought I'd make an experienced comment - After thinking about it some more, I'm also following Bob's recommended Mark 1 imager suggestion as well, so I'm just taking 1 basic lens and DSLR and will leave my new ...

Lunt PT mod- vibration dampening

Hello, New to A-Hydrogen viewing and imaging with a Lunt 50mm/BF600. I am trying to record video for stacking and find adjustments to the PT'r to be difficult without bumping the scope too much. I've seen the remote tuner sold by Lunt and would rather save some honey for a stacking filter rather tha...
