Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

I literally just bought a Meade 4000 series #140 triplet barlow.

Will experiment and report soon. :)

Re: Lovely big prom today | Sept 15th 2019

I hope I did not get the details wrong on the 178M and I believe this was what made me stop to buy the 290M, but I never thought about the fact of less lenses in the middle! I also wished to get the 290M as a Guider for Deep Sky, instead of using the 178M. QE seems to be about the same ~75% and the...

Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

Hi, Marty It's really straight forward. All information is given. You can use all triplet barlows with an airspace. However, the magnification will depend on whether it's a long type or short type of Barlow. You just need to increase the airspace about 8-10mm or so at least for the long type. I did...

Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

No one seems to make a suggestion for a "work-around" solution to the sphero-chromatism inherent in the Schmidt plate. Of course, custom solutions are there, but rather too expensive. In my stores I found a so called apo Barlow I never found any use for. It's a triplet with an air gab, a cemented p...

Re: Huge Prom Today, Convection Cells | Sept 19th 2019

Thanks all, didn't even realize SpaceWeather published it. :bow I have read they are between Texas and Alaska in size. How big does that translate in arcseconds as seen on the sky? I would guess no bigger than two arcsec at best. I can detect them easily in my 70mm refractor. But not like this!! A t...

Re: PST etalon repair, decontacted?

I figured as much, but learned a lot fooling with it. And I have some spare PST parts to mess around with like the lenses and various threaded plates. I'll just let the etalon be and consider it dead.

Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

Hi Marty, a question: Does your SCT have cooling fans? If yes, have you tried if it makes a difference for the "twitchy and nervous looking" CaK image (as you called it in a post above), if the fans are running or not? Kind regards, Frank Hi Frank, No sir, I don't have the cooling fans (tempest). I...

Huge Prom Today, Convection Cells | Sept 19th 2019

Heya, I was all clouded out this morning so went on with the day. Around noon (Eastern) it cleared up and I got a chance to look at that huge prom on the limb that is changing quite rapidly. Just in the few minutes I was imaging it, it went from a hedgerow to something else as it changed its morphol...

Re: PST etalon repair, decontacted?

I got to test it today. Was able to focus a sharp sun. But was not able to see HA details, just a sharp orange solar disc with no details. Full turn to the left, and it went very dark/dim. Full turn to the right and it got very bright. Working between the two extremes, no details, just dimming and b...

Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

But don't doubt, that a SCT is not capable of doing great images in CaK. I'm doing great progress in doing just that with my modified barlow! Just stay tuned! I would be very interested in this as well. While I would love my 200mm F6 newt to do the job, it's huge and heavy. I much prefer to work wi...

Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

Hello Marty Thanks for the update. What you are experiencing with the long Newton is most likely thermal turbulence. You are letting in radiation in a long tube that at near focus will be around 70 deg Celsius at least! That's my temperature measurement with the DERF and a SCT at the exit hole near...

Marty,
I don't see the four small spacer flakes???
Are these visible?
Not that I recall ever seeing.

This... does not bode well. Likely they are gone and this is now garbage.

Re: PST etalon repair, decontacted?

I've recontacted a PST etalon twice and a SM40 etalon once simply by pushing them together with even pressure. Try this first. Hey Mark, Was there a sure way to know they recontacted when you did it without total reassembly and pointing it at the sun and tuning? Any ideas on safe cleaning solution ...

Re: PST etalon repair, decontacted?

Here's some images to help show what I was trying to describe. When looking through it, installed, there's just an orange blob for the sun but no details, so it's not on band or anything no matter how it tunes. When looking at the etalon itself out of the housing, there are these weird lines, almost...

Re: PST etalon repair, decontacted?

Thanks George, I don't even know what's truly safe to do to the etalon contact plates as it is, such as wiping them, washing, what agents can be used to clean, etc. Most info I've found just said to put reagent grade acetone and place the plates together and let it evaporate and they "snap" together...

Re: What do you think is the most versatile high resolution solar telescope design?

So it's a been a year since I posted this question, figured I'd follow up with the recent chatter. I've done three approaches overall with three scope designs. I've used the 150mm clear aperture refractor. 200mm F6 reflector with D-ERF. 200mm F10 SCT with D-ERF. This is completely anecdotal on my pa...

PST etalon repair, decontacted?

Hey all, I'm looking to attempt to repair what seems to be a decontacted PST etalon. I picked this one up in a deal because it was not working, figured I'd give it a try and learn something along the way. I've looked up some resources and read a little bit, but curious if anyone has successfully rec...

Re: Lovely big prom today | Sept 15th 2019

I have checked out the 290M too sometime ago and I am guessing it really matches your setup. I moved over to the 290 from the IMX178 sensor for small pixel work, while it has fewer pixels and a smaller sensor, it's well suited to high resolution solar system photography just as it is used for plane...
