Re: October 22 2020 Observations. Magnificent Prominence!

Hi I had a brief view of the big prom between clouds. Cold and windy. Trying a new Vision King 3x Tele-extender barlow on the 90mm f600mm triplet with Prom Quark Combo. It looked sharp right across the field. Hard to choose between the 25mm Clave' and the 32mm Meade SP. Larger in the 25mm but bright...

Re: Basic question about PST etalon to focus spacing.

Hi If you do what I do in the Mak180, all glass and metal construction, and put a 1.25" 35nm ERF after the PST Collimating lens the light reflected off it goes back through the PST Collimating lens again and goes out as a reverse expanding beam. This might then be viable as an internal ERF in the SC...

Re: Basic question about PST etalon to focus spacing.

Hi I tried Christians Vs advice on my 127mm Triplet to auto-collimate the PST axis with the telescope optical axis and it improved the sweet spot. I am about to do that on my Mak. I have painted the inside of the focusser with some layers of motorcycle pot black to make the 2" nose piece a better fi...

Re: Basic question about PST etalon to focus spacing.

Hi This shows you need a very short 2" diagonal on the C8 to have the same quality image as with the old ones supplied with a 1.25" prism. https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/478721-c8-actual-focal-length-w2-sct-style-mirror-diagonal/https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/478721-c8-actual-focal-length-w2...

Re: Basic question about PST etalon to focus spacing.

Hi For the C8 Celestron say: https://www.celestron.com/blogs/knowledgebase/what-are-the-optimum-back-focus-distances-for-celestron-scts This CN post is interesting and seems to say 100mm for a 2000mm focal length from measurements. https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/478721-c8-actual-focal-length-w2-...

Re: Basic question about PST etalon to focus spacing.

Hi

I do not have a SCT.

Its not overthinking. The F10 required for the PST is only available at one fixed point behind the scope back with a moving mirror focusser. And the focal surface is only the best it can be there.

Cheers. Andrew.

Hi

I only had a brief look.

One nice bright jet prom at 7.30 for me and a hint of a hazy prom high over the surface at 12.00.

Cheers. Andrew.

Re: Basic question about PST etalon to focus spacing.

Hi For SCTs and MCTs with moving mirrors you need to use this set up method. The quoted FNo and the best focal surface is set to be with the focus a fixed point behind the back plate of the telescope. You need to know what this distance is for your particular model. Should be set for a typical eyepi...

Hi Mark,

Should the circular polariser go between the etalon and the eyepiece?

Re: Santel M180 F10 Rumak Maksutov first light

Hi

I did stock up with a few camera ones so need to look at.

The two I have did seem to work on dimming the chromosphere and seemed to reduce reflections.

Thanks. Andrew.

Re: Santel M180 F10 Rumak Maksutov first light

Hi I have some questions about polarisers: Are the normal ones supplied in 1.25" filters just linear polarisers? I have 2. One is fixed as screwed in and one has the filter in a rotating mount. I put one near the front of the PST Mod2. After the collimating lens and a Baader 35nm ERF and before the ...

Re: Visual Report 01/10/2020

Hi

Are the sort of details I am seeing consistent with other visual observations of the same prominences.

In Rsfoto's image I see the active region as imaged but the area I see structures in is a fuzzy hedge in the image?

Cheers. Andrew.

Hi Rod,

With polarisers I saw pretty much as you imaged with the MAK180 PST mod2.

I saw the main white thread you imaged and both the black features.

The other white parts I did not notice from re-call.

Cheers. Andrew.

Hi Nice image to compare to what I saw today. I spent most time observing the large prom group at 09.30 on your image. With the newly added polarisers I could see more surface details. I could clearly see the white channel to the right with the thin black squiggle above it and the dark fuzzy patch b...

Hi I put the F10 lenses back in the PST Mod2.
