Re: Realworld difference between C8 and C11 h-alpha levels of detail with excellent seeing?
Hey It sounds like a Airylab Solar Scintillation Monitor would be a good investment for you to get some real data on seeing at your site. Setting the sensor next to your aperture will tell you exactly what you have. If it were me, I would use one for as many sessions as possible with your present se...

Re: Zoom Meeting - 21 February @ 18:00 UT
Another suggestion for brief discussion. I’m wondering if there might be enough interest in putting together an afternoon or two workshop that would cover image processing. I know I would pay to take part in a class put on by a couple of our accomplished imagers. I think , if we put it out in the Cl...

Re: Daystar Quantum tuning question
David, I like the idea of a piece of gear travelling literally all over the world in the SC community! (On second thoughts, however, my recent experiences with the German mail services make me wonder how many stops that power supply would make before its trail disappears somewhere..) Frank That is ...

Re: Daystar Quantum tuning question
You know what would be cool? A group purchase of a Hydrogen spectrum tube power supply. It seems like a quality unit that can power a tube for longer than 30 second intervals can be had for about $300. It could be passed around to those who go in. Tubes are cheap and easily purchased individually. ?...

Re: Help with Solar Spectrum etalon
Thanks Lars. That’s good advice. I just need some clear weather. The vignetting with the reducer made things kind of confusing. I’ll try it at f/32 visually. So much to consider when assessing issues. Oven temp, the 4x telecentric, correct spacing, rigid optical train, seeing...Taking the camera and...

Re: Help with Solar Spectrum etalon
Good advice. Thanks.
I do plan to buy a IMX174 camera. Trying to decide whether the increased cost over of a Basler over an ASI is justified. I figured my 3.45 micron camera would do well at f/16.
I’ll try binning, and post some images

Re: Help with Solar Spectrum etalon
Ok. So this is normal. Does one just crop the unvignetted part of the image with ROI during capture? I've tried both a IMX183 and a IMX253 which has a 1.1" sensor and 3.45 um pixels. What concerns me is the fact that the image with the reducer does not vignette symmetrically. I don't know if you can...

Help with Solar Spectrum etalon
So I have a new SS RG 18mm aperture 3A filter. As of now, I have it on a 102mm refractor at f/32 using a Baader 4x telecentric. I believe I have the spacings correct with the telecentric. I have been trying to use a .5x reducer ( just an inexpensive GSO). With this, I'm getting terrible vignetting ....

Re: Gamma not working on camera
Just an update for those with Grasshoppers that have had similar issues. Running b2.7beta solved the problem with gamma. Contrary to some other peoples experiences who were using a plug-in, I have not noticed a slowing in FPS with gamma on. Problemo solved!

Re: Gamma not working on camera
Thanks Alexandra. I’ll open it under Administrator. Yes. The gamma button is there, and clicks on. Just no affect. It sounds like a FireCap issue. Others have reported similar with the camera. There is a plug-in that fixes it , but draws down capture speed, which makes it a no go. I’m wondering if t...

Re: Gamma not working on camera
No. Not in Mode 7 ( which reminds me; Firecapture is a read only program. There is no way to have it remember settings. Right?). Gamma button checked. I tried it in Flycap, but I have never used the program before. It recognized the camera, but I couldn’t tell if it was working or not. I could not b...

Gamma not working on camera
So I have a new to me used camera. FLIR Pointgrey grasshopper3 12.3MP GS3-U3-123S6M-C. 3.45um pixels Using FireCap the gamma control does not seem to have any effect. I have the software installed for Point Grey, and otherwise everything seems to work. Using my ZWO Camera in FireCap, gamma works fine.

Eric. I’m very impressed with your work. Very nice. Both the Solar Max 90 and the Daystar images are remarkable.
I might have asked before, are the prominences on the Calcium images from separate imaging? From Ha?

Re: Readily Available Long Focal Length Refractors
Ishtar makes a 6” f/10 objective optimized for Ha that runs about $1200. They also make a regular 6” f/10 for less. Their lens cells look nice. One down side of some of the cheaper telescopes are lens cells that can not be collimated. I would imagine this would be important for a long focus refracto...
