Re: Solar Spectrum advice, tips, do's and don'ts

It should be more than okay "just" to use the Aries filter. When you have a first class h-alpha filter with superb finesse, spectral uniformity and bandwidth you should be aware that using a SM2 can introduce some aberration problems. If I look in my SS 0.3A filter I can not think of any d...

Re: Tips on buying a 150mm telescope for solar photography

It can be tricky to say why a filter performes better. But transmission is one of the more delicate issues in a solid etalon system. Mica can behave in different ways. It is often not neutral in color. Homogeneity and transmission can do a lot in the contrast department. I have seen in a 0.4A SE Qua...

Re: Tips on buying a 150mm telescope for solar photography

If you have a more than okay Quark - the single stack Lunt will not show more details - but you can image the full disk. Side by side my 0.6 A Quantum and a Bresser 127mm f9 doblet was a little bit better on surface details and stunningly better on prominences... A very good Quark at the same meetin...

Re: Tips on buying a 150mm telescope for solar photography

As advised I will use the Quark too. Be familiar with that combo. To be fair I have seen Quarks from very bad to excellent... If your Quark is good - keep it. I do have a Quantum SE 0.6 A filter. And I even have a test sheet. It is better than any Quarks I have tested. To be honest my concerns regar...

Re: SCT Celestron 9.25 for Solar Imaging

If you do not tilt the filter in an off-axis SCT you will not be able to see any h-alpha features. It is the way an interference filter works. It will be several Angstroms from the center line. I don't know about the Quark wedge draw tube. But the Quantum filter wedge I still have do not change the ...

Re: SCT Celestron 9.25 for Solar Imaging

You will NEVER get a decent image with that configuration! You will need a 1.25" SCT wedge drawtube from Daystar . The filter needs "to look" off-axis too!!. The Quark needs to tilt a little bit. It will never show you any h-alpha details at all. You will be outside the center line. A...

Re: Solar Spectrum Filter. What is needed to make it work?

Hi James! You can see how it works with my filter on a 8" Baader Triband SCT. You have the TZ3, SS 0.3A, the 0.4x Baader Telecompressor.... I do have a 0.6A Quantum (Del Woods etalon) filter. It works the same way. Very close to your SS 0.65 filter. And you will be more than happy with that fil...

Re: Help with Solar Spectrum etalon

Hi David Forgot to say congratulations with your new filter. I have the same filter from SS and a Quantum 0.6A. The SS filter is an extremely good filter. My filter is on band right out of box. I use it with a Baader 8" Triband and a 3x Baader telecentric and a 0.4x Baader reducer a Takahashi 1...

Re: Help with Solar Spectrum etalon

Hi David!
The best way to test your system is to look at the Sun visually. You will see if your system is uniform. And it will show you if you have tilt problems in the system. A 0.3A filter is extremely demanding if you don't have control of the f32 all the way to the eyepiece/camera.

Re: Prism or mirror diagonal best for solar Ha?

I use a Takahashi 1.25" prism diagonal. The filters are 0.6A Quantum (former ATM) and 0.3A SolarSpectrum. Refractors and a 8" Baader Triband SCT. I have tested a number of mirror diagonals and I will say that the Takahashi gives you observations with 0 reflections. World class. The Baaders...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Leo, I have the small ASO 1 0.3A filter. Its very even and bright in my 8" Triband SCT. Visually, active filaments are pure black streaks and the contrast are amazing. The TEC controller works fine. No issues. I do have a great Quantum 0.6A - its with an old Del Woods etalon.

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Hi Alan! Hmm - back to Daystar. You need to get a test rapport for free, its a PE filter. My filters works at 108F and 110F. Your filter is indeed a very hot one. Looks like your Quantum house can't hold the temperature and what you see can be a bad etalon or that the filter has uneven temperatures ...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

In the rear mounted etalon world I will always give the advice to buy the normal SE filters or the same from SolarSpectrum. So many other things can interfere like your telescope, temperatures, telecentric lenses, reducers, eyepieces, your own eyes astigmatism and cameras etc. that the SE type works...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Rainer I will try to stop too. But in the old days when it was Del Woods who was the owner, you will not get a test sheet. I dont think he did test them that way. It was more of an artist working with these delikate mica etalons. You have to trust that he did a good job even it took years to get a f...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Rainer, it was a upgrade from an ATM filter and they dont do tests for free and you will not get a SE filter test with a new filter. You have to know how you read the numbers when its not a PE filter. The SE filters can be anywhere from nearly PE to The minimum SE quality. It means that FWHM and spe...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Bob, I did pay 50 dollars to to get a test sheet. We did The same with the two 0.5A University filters. I think just like top quality Apos and mirrors you need to have some numbers to look at. If the SM90ii is on band I will not be happy at all. Rainers filter sheet with Freds shows that my Quantum ...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

To be honest, most Daystar filters I have seen visually has been good. I have owned a T-scanner 0.7A and a Quark. Sold both because I really bought them just for fun and you can't look in 4 filters with 2 eyes ;) The Quark btw has a weird temperature setting, but my friend who has it now can work ar...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Hi Bob, yes thats why I have kept my old filter. Always thinking its a good ATM etalon when I was thinking about maybe something better. And my mix with a Solar Spectrum0.3A filter and The Baarder Herschel Wedge works brilliant. I still do stupid things ;) selling a good 0.7A T-scanner and the worst...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

BTW one of the old University 0.5A filters was owned by John Hicks. Del told him it was a great etalon. And I must say that the test sheet shows its out of this world filter. My 0.6A SE filter is close to a PE filter.

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

Bob - I hope you will get your filter back and fixed. We did send two 0.5A University filters and my 0.6A ATM to Daystar. They all needed new blockers, trimmere and a Quantum house. Turn around time was 5 weeks. And for sure its still the old Del etalons.... I had tested a lot of new (rear-mounted) ...

Re: Advice requested on Quantum filter purchase

I have a Quantum SE 0.6A filter. Its an old ATM filter (Del Woods etalon). It shows prominences in great details. It is still the best h-alpha filter I have seen prominences. You will see many details "inside" the prominences and the dynamics is out of this world. I do have (normal with th...
