Re: 12May2013 AR11745 and AR11744 (along with CaK full disk)

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Still using single frame selection for my images - I have to become more comfortable and familiar with stacking! (Somehow can't believe it will work with the relatively bad seeing I experience here.)

Cheers.

Wow! Beautiful images. I'd planned on some imaging this morning but the clouds are rolling in to stay for a couple of days. Hope you capture more of the fine show!

Thanks Walter and Alexandra!

Walter - I'm using a homemade telecentric consisting of four Edmund Optics achromats.

Hello Everyone.
Decided to take the plunge with a Daystar filter. Here are my first imaging attempts taken April 23 to 26.

Re: Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Here's a full disk image taken yesterday. The dated image is a photomerge of about six images with some flat fielding. The undated image (sharpened and curves) shows the high contrast "sweet spot" doesn't cover the entire field of view. I moved the scope around to get different regions of the solar ...

Re: Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Thanks again Joe! Here's a re-work of the panorama - I like it better. The CaK shot was done a little differently. Omega filter pair placed between a (negative 150mm) collimating lens and a positive (120mm) refocuser, both Edmund achromats. It was done with 80mm f6 refractor. Full solar disk on the ...

Re: Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Hey Joe. Thanks for the compliments! I don't mind providing images for Bob. I might want to work on them a bit more though .. got a little carried away with "first light" of the solar scope! I have a (nearly) full-disk configuration I'm itching to try, possibly a double pass arrangement along the li...

Re: Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Today's 1st attempt. Once again, only 3 frames stacked. Two images (crudely) photomerged - obvious stitch! I used a focal reducer (about .6x) to get slightly better image scale. Lot's of banding and vignetting - no flat fields taken. How do people generally take solar imaging flats? Attached files

Re: Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Hi Alexandra.

Thank you for the advice! I will give further stacking a try. It should definitely improve the noise but I'm worried about fine detail. I don't know if my seeing is exceptionally bad - but it's bad!

Thanks for the encouragement too!

Photos of the system. ISTAR 100mm f12 objective mounted on Antares tube. Moonlite focuser. Point Grey Grasshopper express - my newest splurge - (also use a DMK31AU03). There's a Borg T-thread helicoid focuser in front of the camera. The filters are held in kinematic mounts (purchase on eBay) which a...

Re: Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Thanks, Joe. I've attached drawings for the telecentric system used for these pix. The barlow magnification factor was about 2.2. Three Edmund Optics achromats were arranged as shown. The Gerd Neumann filter holder was used to attach the filters using kinematic lens mounts (eBay). Photos in next pos...

Solar H alpha with eBay filters

Hello Everyone. I've attached my 1st attempts at H alpha photography with the "omegabob" eBay, tilt-tuned, H-alpha filter pair. Although they pale in comparison with some of the amazing imagery submitted to this forum, they were taken under very bad seeing conditions (mid-afternoon, hot and windy) ...
