Re: LUNT 300mm Ha SolarScope - Question ??

Terry, You would probably seldomly use the scope at full aperture due to seeing limitations unless you have an A1 site nearby but you can always stop it down. You have a lot of aperture to work with here. And if you did get one of those rare days that you could use all 12" of it there would be no on...

Re: ZWO ASI178MM Monochrome Camera first light

Hi James, Those are excellent first images you have got. Much better then what I got when I started. Now when it comes to H-alpha surface shots you need to tune the filters looking at the result of the camera, but you already know this, and the second point is to focus well. Focusing is an easier t...

Thanks for the comments everyone. Your input and tutelage will be very valuable concerning imaging. I may be a skilled visual observer but I am truly in my infancy in astrophotography.

Re: February 19 2021 Observations

Thanks for the report James. Just cloud and rain this weekend. I'm going to carry on sorting out the loft this morning, then I feel listening to music, drinking beer and preparing food will be the order of the afternoon. I may see if I can get away with watching Star Wars this evening, however this...

ZWO ASI178MM Monochrome Camera first light

So here is the second part of the session I did today ( 2-19-21 ) before work. My first attempt at imaging the sun with the new ZWO camera. It was cold, windy and the seeing sucked! But I tried anyway. All are just simple captures that I edited in GIMP. They are certainly not what you guys and gals ...

My seeing was horrible today too for me. Your images still turned out good though. Seeing once again how good your images are reminds me of how much I have to learn.

February 19 2021 Observations

Session time is 11:30am until 12:45pm EST local time ( US ). Skies are partly cloudy with poor seeing. The temperature out is 43F. Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 44.5x ( Ha ) I could pick out all the filaments shown on the GONG Cerro Tololo image. The best ones are located in the SE and SW part...

I agree with you there Rainer. He would certainly be biased to Lunt Solar Systems. His company, and while most of us use something from Lunt of sorts not all of us use Lunt scopes. I use Coronado for example.

Re: The Furry Calcium Chromosphere and Playing With New Toys - 18th February

Thanks peeps! I do like visual James. in winter and in the solar drought with generally less favourable weather it is nice just to be able to eyeball our star and enjoy. Later in the year when the weather is generally better (hopefully!?!?) I have more focus on imaging as I know there's more time. ...

I’m really hoping to take part on Sunday too Alexandra. Etalon rating with hydrogen tubes would be a very interesting topic. Here’s an idea for a future session - I wonder if we could persuade someone like Andy Lunt, Mark Wagner or Helmut Kessler to join us for a discussion on a set theme? Would ha...

I noticed the emerging sunspots in the NE earlier today in the SDO continuum image but clouds stopped me from grabbing a scope and looking for it myself. Thanks for the heads-up.

Paul, The version of Ubuntu I am running is Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS. It works well on my 2013 model homebuilt desktop running an Intel I5 processor and 16gb of ram. 250gb SSD and 1TB conventional disc drive. I am not using Wine yet for running Windows software on Ubuntu but that could change. My solar co...

Very nice Mark. Well done. I love hearing of your exploits. And that SMII90 does do well with high magnification doesn't it!? And I like hearing on you doing visual too!!

Nothing for me today as I am under rainy skies. Thanks for the views!

Blessings

Paul, Are you a Linux user? I have both Linux and Windows 7 on my desktop. On a reboot it first displays the grub screen where I can select which OS to boot into. As Windows 7 is now a year past support I find myself using Ubuntu more and more. I like it's simple old-school layout better than that o...

Thanks James. Glad you got the emerging flux region today, nice to see we have some spots visible in white light, is an indication magnetic flux levels are increasing. Just grey skies for me - I took the opportunity to replace the power socket on my eq6 using the attached method; not bad for the £3...

Going through the download store on my Linux ( Ubuntu ) desktop I find an image editing and stacking program called Siril. I have never heard of it. I use GIMP. It's open source and free. I use a Linux build ( Ubuntu ) on my home computer and GIMP is available in it's download store. GIMP was developed first for the Linux OS before being made available for MacOS and Windows.

Yes, I got them visually today. Two just west of the central longitudinal meridian in the NW quad. Small but better than no spots at all. I hope they grow.

Well done James :hamster: I would recommend loading up FireCapture (for acquisition), Autostakkert 3 for stacking and ImPPG for sharpening.
