Additional white light filter(s)

Post by jetstream »

I have a Baader wedge coming this week that has an ND3 and Solar Continuum filter pre-installed.The scope being used will be a 90mm triplet, with a variety of eyepieces ranging from 35x to 100x or more and was wondering what additional filters would be useful? Not sure if a variable polarizer or fixed ND would be appropriate or maybe something different. The only filters I have are H beta,OIII and UHC,any suggestions are appreciated.

ps-this is my first venture into solar...

Thanks for the welcome your set-up looks great,I hope to try imaging down the road.Getting my feet wet with the wedge-pretty excited to try solar.Maybe a variable polarizer or another Nd for the eyepiece would be good to have-not sure how bright the image will be as is-or how much room is underneath the eyepiece adapter.

Hi Gerry

welcome to that wonderful site. Have sun, fun and post a lot. Yes an UV/IR cut is a must. Get one from Beloptik, it workes also later on with a CaK wedge ;-)

You need a UV/IR filter with the Baader continuum as it leaks IR around 900nm.

I can see I have a lot to learn here! When we say the Continuum "leaks" does this produce degraded images or can it harm my eye? When the wedge gets here it will have-after the prism-the continuum,ND3,then Eyepiece.Where in the optical train does the UV/IR cut filter go?Please excuse my ignorance.I'm going to check on ordering one now.

Hi Gerry

I would place the UV/IR cut nearest to the eye or CCD

Thanks for the placement info,I'll get a 2" UV/IR cut for the end of my 1.25"-2" adapter, and then run the polarizer on the end of the eyepiece.Last night I ordered a Baader 1.25" polarizer, these should get me started.I've emailed Beloptik about their filter, not sure how long to get one.CaK wedge??!...oh,oh,more to get!lol!

Thanks Bob,great link. Those graphs really illustrate the continuum leak and the images show how much difference blocking the IR can make. This is very good to know
