Herschel Wedges & filters

Post by ForrestLockhart »

Just one more time for us newbies. Now that my Lunt 60PT is purring along, I'm again thinking about purchasing a Herschel Wedge for my 4" NP-101 refractor. One dealer says "Don't do it because the sub-diameter lens set could overheat and shatter." Another dealer says" It will be fine IF you don't keep it trained on the Sun for too long". Too long was never defined.
So I called TeleVue, and talked to a Nagler family member who has an NP-127 and uses the Lunt wedge "all the time".
I've come to trust your collective judgement more than that of the dealers. I want to trust Mr. Nagler, but I don't want to fry my favorite scope. What say ye, oh solar gurus?
Another question - With the Lunt wedge, has anyone tried a simple 18% transmission Lunar filter to reduce visual glare?

Forrest,
I went through the same angst when considering my Genesis for white light with a Baader wedge....
I think it was Pedro who finally convinced me that the Petzval lens group at the rear were OK.

Adding a variable polarising filter after the ND3 etc. is the usual solution....
