Atik 314L+.Any good for solar?

Post by GUS » Thu May 15, 2014 11:02 am

Is the Atik 314L+ any good for solar.I would be using it with an LS 60 PT and Coronado SM 40.What about some of the other Atik cameras.

GUS,
I have and use the ATik314L for spectroscopy. I also have the ATik 16ic and ATik16icS.
IMHO not suitable for solar imaging.....
You really need to consider a mono video type camera, fast frame rate (to freeze the seeing) and the ability to take and stack AVI files for maximum quality.....
The DMK series is still popular and the new CMOS QHY5L-II and ASI 130 cameras are giving interesting results.

Thanks Merlin & walter.Out of curiosity is the Atik 314L+ similar to the lunt solar imager, they seem to have similar specs.

GUS,
You are indeed correct!
For the life of me I don't know why Lunt would recommend such a cooled CCD camera for solar imaging!!
I can't remember see any "solar" images from this camera...
Anyone have some examples?????

Gus,
I only use my ATiK314L for spectroscopy.
The DMK gets used for solar...

The slow framerate would mean that in a given period of time you aren't getting that many frames to stack. it takes 2 seconds to download a frame...in comparison a mono planetary camera would have captured over 100 frames in that time. That makes a big difference when it comes to stacking.

Fine solar details can and do change quickly over time....granulation cells refresh in about 5 minutes, don't they?

The big advantage would be it's 16-bit image depth. That should make it a great tool for dragging out faint prominence detail even when imaging the main disc.

I guess that the ideal imaging weapon would be a 16 bit camera capable of running at about 60fps?

Yes, here is a thread I started about my experience with a ZWO ASI130MM

Definitely Gus, the ZWO are no good for narrow-band, but OK for white light, it's a shame as they are inexpensive. I ended up getting a PGR Grasshopper 3 with the Sony ICX687 sensor. No solar pics from it yet, clouds & rain since purchase.

Gus, direct from Pt Grey, you create an account & login to their web store, no official dealers in Australia that I know of.
Ordered Sunday night & had it on Thursday by FedEx.
