Hi,
Does anyone knows what is aperture limit to use Baader ND5 solar filter? My friends is considering using it on 18" Newton scope.
Thanks in advance for any info

Hi Pawel
no idea at all. But you could calculate it and then suggest an additional ND filter in front of the eyepiece. I guess he needs at least an ND 3 to be on the safe side. Sorry not to be of better help

I don't think you would ever get seeing conditions that would support that much aperture. 6" and less is all that's practical.IMO

Paweł, it's rather determined by optical train's brightness = by focal ratio rather than aperture. Dr Hänssgen's 107 cm Dobsonian (http://www.cruxis.com/scope/scope1070.htm) works fine with ND5 at full aperture :]

I would love to get a peek threw that Thanks for picture
I looked threw your images but didn't see any solar images taken with that big scope.
Do you have some to share ?

Bill, check out the link in my post - it's Erhard Hänssgen's telescope (whom I haven't met). I'd certainly like to try imaging with it some day
