First light for the Basler 1920-155um based upon the IMX174
Hi all,
Despise a cold, I managed at least to make some test with the new Basler based upon the promising IMX174 Sony CMOS sensor. This large size sensor (1/1.2") boast a full HD resolution at 155fps on USB3 interface with global shutter and quite large pixels of 5,85µm.
I measured the performances and they were even better than the specs :
- It slightly above 12 bits of real dynamic or 74dB or over 5000 grey levels
- more than 33,7Ke- well depth
- a low read out noise of 6,5e- : that is very low considering the 320Mpixel/s throughput and the global shutter mode !
The quantum efficiency is high as well, on par with its CDD counterparts such as the ICX674/694.
Nevertheless the measure are not everything for sensors, especially when Sony embeds some noise processing pipelines, I saw that with the promising IMX035 that was a real disappointement in the end.
Fair seeing this morning and a great weather, so I tested with a HaT 203mm solar telescope and a PST etalon + BF15.
The very narrow interference fringes quickly diseapear with a sligh camera tilt. I use 12dB gain on a range of 48, the base gain is very low. I use some gamma as well as usual.
The throughput was slowdown to 97 fps because of my SATA2 interface on my second SSD.

About 18months ago I spoke with an engineer from the PGR about their prospective camera with this chip. And then I came to conclusion that this will be my next camera for solar imaging. Just need to change my instruments for larger scale and larger field.

I regret the CMOSIS square ratio though, this IMX is a pure HDTV 1,6 ratio.
Sensitivity is also a bit on the low side as well when compared with CCD/CMOS deeply depleted sensors, it is not deeply depleted as you can see below :
It is not a big deal for solar imaging though.
Ang images are so clean, the only sensor that gave me this feeling is the EV76C560 from E2V when used in rolling shutter.

Why in this case, you do use the icx174 instead of continue to use EV76C560 from E2V ?fjabet wrote:

Because it's larger, faster, it is a global shutter, that's quite important for solar imaging, and it has a better dynamic.
But it's more expansive as well (x2) and I think it may not perform as good for planetary imaging.
The E2V is a very good all around performer thanks to its huge QE in the NIR version.

you understand what you tilt the plane of the sensor is on the optical axis, is it?
I while back I had problems with banding Lumenera Infinity 2-1 spectrum sunscreen 1 Series 0.3A and solved with pseudoflats but is a nuisance

Sorry I didn't see your post before. The Basler presents light newton rings, but it's very faint when compared with a CMOSIS for example. I used a tilt adaptor and they are gone once for all. I use flat for dust only if needed. I do make darks but that's quite straight forward.
The Basler doesn't have any chamber glass cover, that means the sensor is directly exposed. That is a good thing for in solar imaging each glass plate brings its own possibility of interference fringes...

at first my idea was to buy this model GS3 U3-41C6NIR-C-1 "USB 3.0 Grasshopper NIR Camera for the entire sun at 1 meter focus f10
This camera seemed to me very interesting price and sensor format but I discouraged some comments on the banding effect
even so I am optimistic that with the pixel size and focal ratio that is difficult for me to appear newton rings, I'm right?
