New ZWO large sensor camera

Post by thesmiths »

I saw this posted on Nov 6 by Sam Wen from ZWO in the Yahoo Group for ASI Cameras. He was announcing their new camera ASI174 with the IMX174 sensor. Availability expected in the beginning of 2015 and looking for beta testers. As it uses a global shutter, the expectation is that will not show banding like the other ZWO cameras. The target competition is the PointGrey Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-23S6M, which uses the same chip.

ASI174 features:
SONY's first global shutter CMOS
Size:1/1.2" 5.86um*5.86um
USB3.0 1936*1216@128fps 12bitADC
Peak QE:76%

Funny about the price. So Sam at ZWO is basically asking his Yahoo user group how much they want to pay for the new camera. Apparently, the comparable PGR camera is now selling for $995 so the consensus seems to be the price needs to be $500 to $600.

Has anyone tried the PGR CMOS camera mentioned above that uses the same chip?

I too would be a beta tester. Time to time we have sunny weather during the winter season.

From the recent post "First Test with new camera Basler ACA1920-155 Refractor 230m ", the IMX174 sensor seems to work nicely for solar. The ZWO ASI174 will apparently be officially launched in 1Q 2015.

I've got to ask....
do these new USB3 cameras work on older machines with USB2 ports - reduced frame rates?

Hi Ken

that is a good offer, if I hadn't already 3 CCD's I would bite too

Pulled the pin a few days ago at the beta tester price and my ASI174MM arrived here in New Zealand a few hours ago. Hope to have first light images soonish but so far it seems at first try to be working fine with latest betas of both firecapture and sharpcap. It is running using USB 2 on a very underpowered and old 10 inch screen netbook, giving me up to about 13 FPS, which seems ok for such an old and low powered USB2 netbook.

I'm collecting solar Ha data at the moment with my 102mm f/6.5 achromat, Quark, and the 174MM, to process later.

I tried a 1.25 inch x0.5 reducer on the end of a longish nosepiece in front of the camera, but got a lot of vignetting, so will try that with a shorter nosepiece between the sensor and reducer to see if can get around that. Maybe I'll need to get a 2 inch 0.5 reducer and the Daystar 2" Quark EP holder to not get vignetting with a reducer on the large sensor.

Haven't noticed any newton rings yet but I might not know properly about that until I start processing the avis as it is hard to see the netbook screen properly in the bright sun.

Cheers,
Chris M

I'm strooongly interested in this camera,as my first one,
It would give me the opportunity to get the full disk at the focal length of my Lunt 100.
After a quick search Google gave me some fine results :

Some, coming from ZWO FB page, could be some kind of adveritsing-photos,
BUT...

Hi John

no, the chip is not big enough for a direct full disk shot
