Damaging a camera?

Post by Stephanh »

Would running an uncooled CMOS camera for a few hours during an outreach thru an H-alpha scope dangerous for the camera?
Can it over-heat and be damaged? I would shade it and typical day temperature is 20-25 degrees Celcius.

thanks

I can't be sure about your camera, but I run my Chameleon 3 (metal chassis; previously the older Chameleon, in plastic) up to 4-5 hours at a time, no problems so far. That's in direct sunlight, with up to 26-28 ℃ ambient temp. (the camera reaches 40-45 ℃).

If you shade yours, it should further reduce any risk of overheating.

My software:
Stackistry — an open-source cross-platform image stacker
ImPPG — stack post-processing and animation alignment

I think your camera will be fine. Mine always is.
