ASI174MM versus ASI290MM for Lunt LS60-B1200

Post by donnw »

Hi All:

New to the group here and have a question that hopefully some folks can chime in on. I've been reading what I can on the web, trying to figure out which camera would be a better fit for imaging with my Lunt LS60/B1200 - an ASI174MM or an ASI290MM. I do want to be able to do full disc without stitching. It seems the ASI174MM is definitely more commonly in use for solar imaging, but not so sure its better. It seems the 290 would have better resolution and has faster read times at 12 bit ADC mode and full resolution. Whether you own both or can shed light on the issue theoretically, I would love to hear some input on why one might be better than the other for my specific setup / application. Thanks much!

Peace and blessings,
Donn

I use a PGR Chameleon 3 which is better in some ways than ASI174. It gives a full solar disk, more sensitive, cheaper but lower frame rate. Several forum members use them. Perhaps worth a look?

The pixel size on the 174 is a bit big for the 60mm. I use a 2.5 Powermate with mine and find that the proms get a bit blocky due to the pixel size. It works great with a Quark though.

The 290 has 2.9 micron pixels which will suit the focal length of the Lunt much better. One thing to consider carefully- the 290 has a rolling shutter. I thought that a rolling shutter pretty much ruled a camera out for solar work?
