Tilt adapter question
Hello everybody and Happy New Year. What are the tilt adapter options for a Flir Grasshopper 3 camera ? Is there any way to adapt/connect the ZWO tilt adapter to the Grasshopper ? Thank you in advance for your help.

Re: Tilt adapter question
Hi Franco,
I just saw in the page that the camera has a C-Mount thread and that is 1" 32tpi.
Being that the case you need an adapter from T2 thread = M42x0.75 to C-Mount 1"-32tpi.
Something like the one below
https://www.amazon.com/0-75mm-Thread-Mo ... 952&sr=8-4
Camera is female C-Mount so the male part fits in there and the Tilt adapter from ZWO has a M42 to M42 male to male adapter and so the female part of the ZWO adapter fits into the amazon adapter.

Re: Tilt adapter question
One more
https://www.amazon.com/Astromania-Femal ... HKM1JKWMKK
and the question still is how do you connect the Grasshopper now to your telescope ?
Do you use a 1.25" nose piece ? If yes then you need to order the nose piece from ZWO which has a T2 thread.
https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com/pr ... ra-adapter
https://www.amazon.com/Serounder-Alumin ... s9dHJ1ZQ==
You will possibly need another adapter from T2 to the part of the telescope ...

Re: Tilt adapter question
Hi Franco...
Happy New Year to you and family as well.
The links that Rainer sent will do the job. I bought another version of the C-to-T adapter many years ago for mate the Daystar tilt adjuster to my Grasshopper Express. You will need the adapter to get the 1.25" nose-piece on the opposite side as well, but the combo is not expensive and will not take up much focus travel.
Daystar does make a C-mount version of their adjuster which will not require any additional adapters, but it is $175.

Re: Tilt adapter question
Thanks a lot Rainer and Brian. I ordered on Amazon the one on the first link, that was the least expensive. It will most likely do the job: I will keep you posted.

Hi Franco,
Glad I helped you. What about the connection of the Tilter to the scope ?

Re: Tilt adapter question
Diving in here a bit late... I have the Daystar CMount tilter, and I find it good, easier to use than the others i've come across. The only thing I would do differently is I would use their TMount tilter instead; it has a larger clear aperture. I find when I use it with my IMX174 chipped (widescreen) camera I get a bit of subtle vignetting with a lot of tilt. Nothing huge, but it hurts my head knowing it's happening

Re: Tilt adapter question
Rainer: I should get the adapter on Wednesday, see that all works well, hopefully, and then see the connection to the scope. I have the nose piece of the ZWO174 that I can try out. Then if I sell the ZWO camera, I will get a new nose piece. Mark: thank you for your input and for pointing me to the very interesting article on your site.

What are the advantages of the FLIR Grasshopper 3 camera to a ZWO 174MM ?

Re: Tilt adapter question
I'm also a bit late to the party. I have both the Grasshopper and the Zwo tilter. I've never had NRs with the Grasshopper ever, so never tried it with it. So why do you need a tilter for the Grasshopper? The ZWO ASI174, that is a different beast for rings. However, I've still never managed to work out how to use the tilter with the ZWO.

Re: Tilt adapter question
Hi Alexandra: thank you for your input. I just received the FLIR Grasshopper 3 with the 174 chip a couple of days ago. Due to the season and weather, I do not know when I will be able to try it and see if I need a tilt adapter. But I want to have one that works just in case I need it. Imaging time you know is precious and do not want to find out I need a tilt adapter and then having to wait for delivery, etc. I also have a ZWO178 camera, and may need the adapter for that. This down time is good for me to review the equipment and see what I can upgrade for the next season. I already have the tilt adapter from ZWO that I have been using for the ZWO174 camera regularly. I just needed the C mount adapter to make it work with the FLIR camera.

Re: Tilt adapter question
Oh I see, I forget the Grasshopper comes with many chips. Yes, that 174 sensor is a pain in the but!

Re: Tilt adapter question
Sounds good Franco!
All you basically needed was the adapter to convert the camera C thread to the T thread on the tilt unit.
I think you will really enjoy the 174 chipped camera!

Re: Tilt adapter question
@Rainer: I tried the new Grasshopper 3 with the 174 chip on Saturday. It is definitely faster than the ZWO ASI174. With my i5 Acer laptop 2.2Ghz 8Gb of memory and 500Gb SSD I got right away two runs at 140 and 141 FPS. With the ZWO camera I was getting at best around 100 to maybe 110 FPS. I have not had a chance to compare noise, but so far I am happy with the upgrade. I still think the ZWO ASI174 is an excellent camera and has a great value to performance ratio. BTW, Rainer, the adapter you suggested works perfectly, thank you.
