Skywatcher solarquest and a lunt 60tha

Post by David Fox »

Hi
Newbie here,

Recently got a new 60tha, having been very pleased with my 50tha on a SW Solarquest.
ehhhhh  can I assume the 60tha is too heavy, as when I move the tuning to the tighter end it moves the scope axis easily - something which does not happen on the 50. Just wondering if anyone is currently using a 60 happily on this without modification? The extras are the zoom lens and 1200bf.

Another comment as I'm on a role. Trying to get the sweet spot on the new 60tha, with difficultly but early days. Does the tuning have to be tight in always to get disc detail? My 50 does, way at the end and then some and its looking that the 60 scope might be similar.

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Hi David and welcome to the forum!

You should be ok weight wise with the Lunt 60 on the solarquest. The reason it is slipping on it's clutch is because you're having to be heavy handed to do the tuning. Once tuning is set you shouldn't really need to be checking it everytime.

I think all these pressure tuners and etalon systems are different, requiring greater or lesser amounts of 'screwing down' When we get more activity on the sun tuning is a lot easier, it's just the patience game as the solar cycle peps up.

Mark

Hi David. Both my pressure tuned Lunts only came on band at the end of the PT travel. As long as you’re not running out of travel to tune it on band, it’s not really a problem. Making sure the piston is properly greased and the o rings are working properly are also key.
My brief experience with both the SW AZGTi and Solarquest mounts is they can take higher loads if you replace the flimsy tripod. I’m even going to try my TV85 and Solarscope filters on the Solarquest when I get an opportunity - that’s about 6kg, but on a strong Gitzo tripod. Your LS60, as Mark said, should be fine

Excellent Mark thanks.
I'm starting to go through this forum and see some thread modifications to the Tpod which look interesting.

Yeah, get a proper tripod, the supplied one is junk unless you're planning on mounting a mouse on it. Don't have several £k of scope balanced on top of the £40 tripod, it's asking for trouble!
