Daystar Quark consideration

Post by David Fox »

Hi there,

I'm considering the purchase of my first Quark and indeed first Daystar product & looking at the magnesium model.

wanting to keep my eyes for a while longer I'm confused as to when an erf is required. sky at night review on this model said ok to 127mm but I've seen 100mm referenced elsewhere.

my scope is 127ed esprit and i already have an uv/ir filter for the front of this proposed Quark.
the erf configuration in their site is down - fact a lot of content on it seems dated.

how safe am i with my scope mm?

If I understand the Quark's instructions correctly no ERF is needed on a scope 80mm or smaller. You would need an ERF on a 127mm refractor to safely use it. I am wanting a Sodium D line Quark and was wondering the same.

Magnesium would be an interesting emission line to observe or image in. I don't see many here who do work in the magnesium band.

Hi David.

I have a Na Quark and a 127mm frac, a 2" UV/IR filter on the nose of the diagonal is all that you need.

Hi David,

Have you considered starting off with a white light setup (maybe you already have this)? WL wedges are a good starting point. After that then maybe hydrogen alpha. Magnesium won't really give you anything spectacular over and above WL. Just a thought.

thanks all,
I've the H wedge and polarizer on the 127 for white light and a couple of lunt ha's.
......of course with this hobby nothing never satisfies 😜 always a desire for more

would you be able to put the Quark into the eye end of the H wedge and provide protection? assume not.

sorry just see the response to my second question from the daystar manual;

''Please note, a Herschel Wedge or white light filter cannot be used with
the Quark. These filters pass very little light by design and so will result
in an extremely dark image if used with the Quark''
