Coming to focus.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today while trying to image in white light with my Astro-Tech AT72EDII refractor and ZWO ASI178MM camera I found out I could not make focus. I needed more infocus travel. Not backfocus. I was trying to get full disc and if I used a barlow it probably would not enable me to do so. Short of modifying the scope how would I do it and keep image scale? My Celestron NexStar 102 refractor came to focus fine and so do both of my Coronado Ha scopes but not the AT72. Any ideas? I haven't tried my Orion70 yet.

Btw, my AT72EDII has no issues focusing with eyepieces for visual use. Just with the camera.

Hi James,

Post a pic of the setup showing the camera and scope together, we can see where can shave off some distance, there's always a way.

Hi James,

That is correct as the focal plane in an eyepiece is more then inside the eyepiece and the focus plane of the camera is in the camera.

I think the problem is the diagonal. As Mark said, post some close up images of the end of the telescope and the focuser including diagonal and camera. Only so we can see if there is a possibility.

I have always asked myself why they do not develop straight through blocking filters in the smaller sizes. There are more people imaging the Sun then visually ... A total failure of the etalon producers.

I'll take a pic of it the next time I take it out when I am imaging. Thanks Mark and Rainer.
