Mark,
I was tempted to sell the last of the kids into slavery to raise funds....
Caution - look at the illustrations in the Ad for the "new" SolarMaxII - it doesn't have the original full sized front etalon...just a PST etalon half way down the tube.
Geee we do that everyday for less than $2,500!!!

They have 60 mm etalons internally and this is a SolarMaxII not the real deal. Nothing special in my opinion. They were 1999 a couple years ago on sale for the original SolarMax until they ran out, weren't they?

To me the SM90 II is just an oversize PST with a 60mm etalon... Imagine all the modding fun I would have with it ;) It's the best value and largest sized internal etalon as far as I can tell, even if it does use primitive tilt tune technology. Like Walter says they cost a small fortune over here in Europe, unfortunately :(

Stephen,
Have you had the opportunity to pull one of these apart? I honestly didn't think the internal etalon would be so large....

S&T mention the "Meade Sale"
Interesting description of the PST:
Coronado PST (Personal Solar Telescope)
40mm Objective; Portable yet large enough to present detailed study of the Sun and its features
H-a (hydrogen-alpha) Viewing; Delivers excellent views of sunspots, prominences, flares, filaments, plagues and surface granulation
RichView Tuning System; Wider etalon tuning range delivers high contrast viewing of surface features and prominences on the limb.

Since when did the PST have the "RichView Tuning system"?????
(EDIT: the latest Ad doesn't seem to show a knurled tuning ring...

It also says the PST has a 30mm internal etalon... We need more pictures of this latest incarnation of the PST ;)

Hi Stephen, Can you explain what you mean by "not the real deal"? I thought the SMII90 with internal etalon was the SS version and with the external etalon added was the DS version? Or are there different sized internal etalons?
Thanks.

the "real deal" being the pre-Meade Solarmax systems which had an untunable internal etalon and SM90 external. The difference in the mechanics and tube itself are significant also.

I have taken one of these apart and studied it. It has an internal either 50 or 60mm etalon which uses compressive tuning exactly like the PST.

Not a bad deal at $2499 but in my opinion a much better scope can be had for less money with an LS60 Pressure tuned scope.

It is cheaper than LS80T with larger aperture
