Eclipse from Madras, OR

Post by rray6 » Mon Sep 11, 2017 6:04 am

Hello All,
I have been on hiatus for a while and not producing any solar images - hence I have not been on the forum for a while. But the eclipse got me back into it again. I braved the crowds (and forest fire smoke) in Madras, Oregon. I gather many of you were also in Oregon - shame we didn't meet up for a drink and chat. I did all my photographing of the eclipse with a new Canon 5D Mark IV and a 300mm L Series f/4 telephoto plus 1.4x tele-extender (420mm focal length) and tracked with an iOptron SkyGuider. I made sure to automate everything as much as possible so I could actually watch the phenomenon. It was my first total eclipse and it was the most glorious thing I have ever witnessed. I can't wait until 2024 - I have to do more! Here are a few of my shots. I stacked 7 bracketed exposures of one of my totality shots to get this totality image. I caught the first diamond ring but was too enthralled with the visual spectacle to catch the second one - I put on the filter a second too early. These images don't begin to compare to many of the others I have seen on this forum but I am overall pleased with my outcome.

These are beautiful Robert, they are exactly how I remember the eclipse, it was really beautiful with your eyes though, nothing can compare to it. I loved the whole event :)

A wonderful record of the event, expertly executed. Nice one.

Thanks for the comments. You're right - seeing an eclipse through the naked eye with all the phenomena going on around you is the most important thing. I know plenty of imagers who went to the eclipse with nothing more than a cell phone camera and spent the whole time observing and not recording the event. As much as I love to photograph, I totally understand that now.
