Townsville Solar viewing Saturday 5th

Post by axlefoley »

We have a solar viewing at the opening of Jezzine Barracks here in Townsville on Saturday 5th from 10am to 4pm weather providing, there should be about 6/7 scopes from The Townsville Astronomy Club and a Rob Black from Ayr with his new Lunt scopes.

Hopefully I will do a time lapse of the day and post back here, just hope the weather holds out, they have predicted showers and we have another cyclone brewing out near the Solomon Islands.

We will be situated at 24 on this map.

Yes, the time lapse presentations that Stephen records at outreach events is always interesting and enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing yours too.

Went down to the Barracks about 9am with total cloud cover and a few light showers but it looked like it would clear so we set up our gear even though only 3 of us turned up we were hopeful, waited till 11am and decided it was a lost cause with literally seeing the sun for seconds.

Rob Black drove up from the Burdekin about an hours drive, Dave Price our club president and my self were there and we did get a lot of positive comments from the general public.

I will post a few photos later and I did a timelapse but I will have a look at it before I post it.

We have another day planed next Saturday hopefully we will have clear skys.

Wow that 150 Lunt of Robs is BIG

Beautiful location for an outreach party Alan! Thanks for the nice photos and hope next Saturday works out perfectly for your group.

An interesting tick here for me is seeing the vehicle in the first photo with the steering wheel on the right side. Thinking further, I bet the majority of the frequent posters on this forum drive on the lefthand side of the road, Tommy

Driving on the left gave me fits a couple years ago when visiting your beautiful part of the world. I spent a lifetime designing and building roadways and bridges so manuerving a vehicle was a real challenge. My brother-in-law who is leaving tomorrow for a three week visit to Australia and Tasmania should not have problem because of being a dentist. He's used to thinking left is right and right is left in keeping with the perspecitve of the patient with whom he's communicating about the work he's doing in their mouth.

I'm looking forward to the several thousand photos he will most likely bring back. We also have different objectives when photographing; he collects human interst shots and I collect shots of inanimate objects.
