Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
Greetings solar friends,
today the seeing was 4/5 for around half an hour, then worsened as the sun came out of the clouds. Best seeing in months! the new six inch was really put to the test, and I can say I now have some of the highest resolution white lights I have ever done so far in the bag. Thats the elation part. The frustration part is that After processing "batch" in AVIstack all my images, I selected the four best for running in Autostakkert2 to get even more details. But only one out of five images would process, and when you hit analyze, it would go for around 80% then REALLY lock the computer up. And yet the results on the one image it did do was so much better. Damn! Any thoughts?
Here is the white light images, starting with a 5x barlow shot (!) with the AR152, DMK51, and Continuum +IR, and Baader Wedge - Autostakkert:
CLICK TO ENLARGE TO 1290 SIZE
Next, I backed off to a 2.5x powermate:
Now Prime focus with the 6 inch:
and a few more of the other parts of the disk - seeing failing fast at 2.5x
I think Ive proven today that the it is certainly possible to out resolve the Zeiss 80mm, which would only record the granulation as tiny round circles, and not the polygons you see here.
Comments Appreciated!

Hi Chris,
Your setup looks like a killer !! The image with the PM x5 is amazing, top class. The others are also very impressive. You are going to have lots of fun with your new gear, hum !!
I was doing some testing on Autostakkert2 and got the same computer lock ups as you described. I reinstalled the ICCapture aiming to have the CODEC reinstalled and everything came to normal. I run the program several times after that without any problem. I think it is worthy to try.
Best Regards,
Fernando

Re: Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
thanks Fernando - you know exactly what Im going through. Ill try that and let you know if it helps. Apollo - "Penumbral Gills"? The penumbral filaments are actually harder to record than granulation, since they are around 1 arc second, and granulation averages 1.5 arc seconds. Needless to say, parts of this field show resolution equal to my .77 arc second theoretical limit. Compare this to the 1.4 for my 80mm. I will now reveal the scope. It is an Explore Scientific AR152 with an ED achromat.

Excellent images Chris! Beautiful detail. I hope you can sort out the software problem. I have had autostakkert suddenly misbehave this weekend and reject in loading files that load perfectly well in avistack. The only way I could get stakkert to load them was to run them through another program and then resave the file.

Lovely set of images Chris! Not sure why autostakkert is misbehaving? Do you have other processes running in the background that could be causing lock ups?

Re: Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
:woohoo: I love that first picture!!!
Have you tried e-mailing Emil for the next version. He was asking for beta testers at the end of the Autostakkert thread and it seems he has fixed a bug which causes hanging. You would be an excellent candidate to test, give him a mail as I want to see the 5 pictures I've never had this problem myself.
Regards
Alexandra

Re: Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
You must be happy with that Chris. That first pic really shows some nice granulation
Re: Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
Thanks everyone - Ill do one more thing, try to run those files which will not run on my brand new super fast computer at work on a win xp machine. Then contact Emil and let him know of my issues. As an interesting side note, I was not able to reproduce the nice granulation pattern in either registax or avi stack no matter how many different things I tried for hours. But AVI stack came closest.

Re: Sundays White Light - Elation but Frustrated!
An update - this morning at work I tried the files that would not fully process with my quad core win 7 at work on my old XP pentium 5 computer and - they worked. The isse is either the quad core or windows 7. I will not contact Emil and see what he can do....

The issue is either the quad core or windows 7.
Well i'm on windows 7 and no probs, but mine is a dual core opposed to quad core...

thanks Mark! I have yet to try it on my regular dual core P5 with windows 7. Slow, but hey, it just might work...
