Post flare loops as absorption features over AR11429

Post by oldfrankland »

I missed the M8.4 class flare Saturday, but was able to image post flare loops more than 1 1/2 hours after the flare subsided. Lots of plasma finding its way back down to the chromosphere. Would have liked to have seen these loops sooner after the flare.

Thanks Jim between your pics and have started reading Astrophysics of the Sun by Zirin I am starting to get a better understanding of the phenomena that I have been witnessing.

Nice series Jim. Like Derek I need to understand more what I am looking at in mine and others images.

You caught them well Jim! Lets hops 1429 fires off a few more big flares as rounds the limb - post flare loops would be the perfect perspective then...

I do, it makes a great paperweight, doorstop, or Christmas tree ornament.
I actually had 2 of them and could never get either one to show anything but an orange fuzzy , featureless ball. Hopefully they have worked out the kinks.

Marvelous Jim, without your knowledge and pictures I wouldn't know half of what I do. I really love to know what I am seeing and I'm never satisfied unless I do and I really appreciate your work to help understand these unusual features. Great pictures!

Alexandra

wow those daystar ions produce very unique images compared to coronado and lunt, i think i am starting to like these closeups, over lunt and coronados.

Stephen if your seeing this, why dont you use your daystar anymore?

A major down side to the Daystar filters is the amount of time it takes, typically less than a couple minutes with my ION 0.8A system, to tune off line into the blue or red wing. The tilting and pressure tune etalons are far superior for fast off-ban tuning and producing dopplergrams. Being able to quickly move from blue to red wing and watch real time the changes in filaments and proms is quite valuable to me, and lost to my ION filter...... That's why I still regularly use my Lunt 50F.

Given a choice, money aside, I would go with the Lunt 100mm pressure tune system.

hi jim, awesome images! i dig those loops! i have been patienly waiting to catch a set go off on the limb. i did catch the M8, and here is a link to the time lapse that i think shows the loops in emission and absorbtion

http://mbucky.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=735

perhaps a large loop had appeared and dissapated before your observation.and great to read and see all the great images in this chat group!

Awesome one, Michael! Welcome aboard here at SolarChat.

As for the flare loops, though seeing was poor and intermittent, I was able to watch loop tops come and go. Several dark ones would appear then fade from view in a matter of a few minutes, replaced by several more, sometimes running at a considerable angle to the earlier loop tops. Totally amazing.
