A complete solar rotation

Post by Montana »

The weather forecast was rain from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, so we had a super sunny day :hamster:

Sadly the Sun has dropped too low, but I was up in the bedroom at midday imaging with the PSTs :hamster: It happens to be exactly 28 days ago that I was able to last image and so I did a side by side comparison of the solar disc after one full rotation (or near enough). I was completely surprised to see how many features in hydrogen alpha which were visible one month ago are still visible today. Note the large filament in the north, many of the active regions, many of the filaments and prominences too. I honestly never expected this and it is fascinating. Remember to click on the magnifying glass top left to inspect the images a bit better.

WOW - you did have a good day :seesaw

All your predicted cloud and rain is sitting over me - I also contemplated trying my new Lunt 100 from the bedroom at about 3.00pm when the clouds parted, but I only got a few minutes of sun before it set so that never happened :? :?

It is amazing how similar your two pst discs are in Ha and in CaK - fantastic bit of luck with the timing but your images ooze quality :bow :beanie: :bow

Lovely set of images Alexandra! Your DS PST is pulling a much tighter bandpass than my DS40 looking at these pics. Very interesting to see the sets of comparison images, its was nice we managed to get some sun this afternoon.

It does appear that the large Filament made the journey too - great comparison.

Lovely images and great comparison, Alexandra.

You really know how to get the best from your PSTs!!

It really is amazing how persistent some of these features are, considering the fluid and dynamic nature of the solar 'surface' on top of the convection zone. It just goes to show how deeply rooted some of these magnetically supported features really must be, despite the surface and sub-surface churning.

Nice observational science......

Great comparison. So surprising the correlation of features. I wouldn't have expected it to be so close.
Thanks for sharing. I've really learned something new here that I can share with others.
Cheers, karen
