solar wedge Lunt 1.25"

Post by Pluton »

Hello,
I would like to ask about the solar prism Lunt 1.25 "and whether performance in a refractor ED80 (the one I currently own) .In relation, contrast and sharpness ..., and eye safety.
Also, what "top pol" mean?
If it refers to a polarizing filter in that place is?
And if it's better this polarizing filter, or Continumm filter?
I have read that some people, the green color of Continuum dislike ..
you can use the polarizing filter and Continumm together?
Very friendly for their information.
greetings To You
Paul

I think it would work very well with your 80mm refractor, it will be perfectly safe. I have no idea about the abbreviations but sometimes people find the brightness with the standard ND3.8 filter a bit bright so will use a variable polarizing filter to dim to comfort. You will see a white to creamy coloured Sun. If you add the continuum filter I would have the thought that the brightness would be OK and no need for a variable polariser. It will be green but this can increase contrast of the granules and penumbral filaments and make it easier for you to see, but really it is a matter of taste. Try without first and if you have any green filters just try them and see if you like it or get any increased contrast. If you then get really fussy you can invest in the continuum filter if you wish. Some people prefer orange or red filters, others prefer the natural pure light without any colouring.

I am sure others with more experience will chip in :)

I have that wedge in my APM 80mm and it works fine. The polariser is used to reduce brightness, although I prefer using a Solar Continuum filter.

Solar kit: GP-C8 with Thousand Oaks Solar filter, APM 80mm F/6, Lunt Herschel Wedge, Solar Spectrum 0.3Å H-alpha filter, Beloptic Tri-Band ERF (80mm free aperture), Thousand Oaks 90mm ERF, Coronado SolarMax II 60mm with Double Stack Unit. Lunt straight B1800 Ca-K module.

With a continuum filter, yes when imaging.
