Close up AR 11459 & AR11460 - White Light

Post by MjrTom »

Hello all!

Well the clouds cleared again for a few minutes between the rain storms to rush out to capture another image this time a close up of two active regions AR 11459 and AR11460
As a break from the norm I have used eyepiece projection.
Vixen SP102M with Baader zoom @ 8mm with Continuum & UV/IR cut filters fitted. Baader ND3.8 solar film
A single Canon 7D DSLR image slightly cropped to remove field curvature present. 1/30 second @ ISO200
Post processed in CS3 with curves and smart sharpen applied. Pedro colour scheme applied as well.
Still got a lot to learn regarding post processing but I think these look OK.

Quite possibly the best image (in my opinion) I have captured in my very short solar imaging activities.

Hope you like it :)

EDIT:
Also a reasonable image of AR11462 & AR 11463

Full disc image from earlier in the day:

Good gracious Mark, the close-ups are unbelievable!! amazing detail, what do you need a DMK for when you can achieve such marvels with a DSLR. Well done

Thanks again Alexandra, your comments are greatly appreciated 8)
Yeah I am getting better at imaging with the Canon 7D in white light.

When seeing conditions allow the results are pretty good. :)

I think I shall start saving for a PST before I look at getting a CCD camera.

Mark, you've done it again, marvelous images with a DSLR. I am also impressed that you were able to get such quality with eyepiece projection, this is usually a challenge for solar!

Thanks guys, really appreciate your comments from people with far more experience in the field of Solar Imaging than I 8)

I am trying to make do with the kit I currently have available to me and make the most of it :)
Surprisingly the Baader zoom eyepiece is an excellent performer, only a slight bit of field curvature to crop out.
The Canon 7D's live view function really helps with nailing focus as does the Moonlite Crayford focuser :)

Very nice close-ups, Mark

Have you tried the Canon 7D video feature for solar imaging?

Eyepiece projection. Baader Hyperion Zoom Eyepiece (8/24mm).

Incredible images Mark. In full size (HR images) the granulation is clearly visible. I also tried eyepiece projection with an Hyperion eyepiece but my results were not as good as yours.

best
