Does the quality of the diagonal affect solar viewing
Does the quality of the diagonal affect solar viewing
I have a Baader Zeiss 1.25'' diagonal on my Quark and 80/400 f5 scope but I need it for a night time scope and don't really want to purchase another one to put back on the Quark because of the cost.
Would a cheaper diagonal degrade the view in any way, if it does then i'll have to fork out for another one.

I would assume higher reflectivity would mean more light/brighter image. Dielectric being the best.
But also, I am a complete amateur in amateur astronomy and never observed/imaged the sun with a telescope lol. So there's that.

Viewing not much I have the cheapest diagonal mounted with my Quark and the views are great
Re: Does the quality of the diagonal affect solar viewing
That would be nice if it didn't matter much, because then I could save money on holding off on a dielectric diagonal as well- as I am currently saving my pennies for a quark/refractor combo as well.

Can't you just use the Baader on the quark in the day and then on your other scope at night?

Yeah I could do that Mark but I prefer to keep my scopes complete and ready to go rather than having to remove & replace stuff from scope to scope.marktownley wrote:Can't you just use the Baader on the quark in the day and then on your other scope at night?

You need to pay for such a luxury. I prefer to have all optics which absolutely warranted does not affect the views. You ca't expect this from very cheap things. Baader always means quality.

I agree, always go for a high quality diagonal. Baader assures that the zeiss diagonal is 1/10 lambda or better

Re: Does the quality of the diagonal affect solar viewing
Why not just leave out the diagonal and use a 2" extension tube (if needed) - no glass is even better than 1/10 wave

Yeah Mike I can do that for imaging but for outreach viewing it would be to difficult for some of the oldies,,,,,,,,,hang on I'm one of them,,,, haha.

Re: Does the quality of the diagonal affect solar viewing
So am I............ sorry I didn't realise that you were talking visual/outreach.
I'm sure quality does make a difference but I often use a relatively modest 2" Ascension diagonal with the Quark plus LS100 combination and get images which seem just as good as I get without any diagonal. Maybe I'm just easily satisfied - or my eyesight is age-limited - but I find it difficult to believe that your outreach client's enjoyment would be significantly reduced by the use of a 'medium quality' diagonal from a respectable maker?
