Causeway Coast Sun Apr 29

Post by brianb11213 »

Apologies for delayed processing & also for the poor quality of the white light detail shots. As usual when the seeing is pants I shoot everything twice as one sequence usually processes much nicer than the other, this doubles the processing time & didn't work for the white light shots. Next time the seeing is this bad I'm going back to the W29 filter ... the detail may not be as good in steady air but it cuts the seeing much better.

Observing conditions were clear but with a thin veil of high cloud moving across from the south. Seeing was downright bad, with continuous large scale (10-15 arc sec) undulations at both low and high frequencies. Very difficult to focus the closeups except in Ha, which was just difficult.

General moderate activity level continues. Older active areas die off or rotate out of view, new ones develop or rotate onto the disk. Overviews:

0849 UT. 60mm, focal reducer, solar film, solar contiuum & UV/IR blocking filters, Imaging Source DMK41 camera.

0844 UT. Solarscope 60, focal reducer, DMK41. Composite of disc & prom shots.

Coronado PST CaK, prime focus, DMK41

There is a nice selection of prominences, especially the one in the north west which is a real beauty, hopefully I've managed to catch something of its essence despite the seeing. Other proms clockwise from the NW. William Optics FLT 110, 2.5x Powermate, Solarscope SF-100 Ha filter set, Imaging Source DMK21AU618 camera.

0937 UT.

0929 UT.

0930 UT.

0935 UT.

AR 11465 is fading away to nothing as it approaches the limb, but there is still crackly activity in Ha.

0906 UT. FLT 110, 4x Powermate, Lunt solar wedge, ND 1.8, solar continuum & UV/IR blocking filters, DMK21.

0926 UT. FLT 110, 2.5x, SF-100, DMK21.

1006 UT. FLT 110, 2x barlow, Lunt B1200 CaK diagonal, DMK21.

AR 11466 & AR 11468 are approaching the western limb but with different fates: the leading group of 11466 is rejuvenated but 11468 is apparently on the point of death.

0902 UT. FLT 110, 4x, wedge etc, DMK21.

0923 UT. FLT 110, 2.5x, SF-100, DMK21.

1003 UT. FLT 110, 2x, B1200 CaK, DMK21.

AR 11469 is large and near the meridian but no longer seems to be "busy".

0904 UT. FLT 110, 4x, wedge etc, DMK21.

0924 UT. FLT 110, 2.5x, SF-100, DMK21.

1004 UT. FLT 110, 2x, B1200 CaK, DMK21.

The remaining three active areas are all in the east. AR 11470, slightly north west of the big spot, is apparently declining to extinction; AR 11471 has a huge "whirlpool" of a leading spot; AR 11472 has appeared suddenly to its south west but as yet has little in the way of white light spots. (They subsequently developed well)

(AR 11470 & AR 11471)

0900 UT. FLT 110, 4x, wedge etc, DMK21

(AR 11472)

0900 UT. FLT 110, 4x, wedge etc, DMK21

0921 UT. FLT 110, 2.5x, SF-100, DMK21 (2 frame mosaic)

1001 UT. FLT 110, 2x, B1200 CaK, DMK21. (2 frame mosaic)

Finally, all that's left of a deceased active area, 11467 near the meridian in the north, is a patch of CaK plage with a couple of pores barely visible.

0958 UT. FLT 110, 2x, B1200 CaK, DMK21.

Processing of a shorter session from Apr 30th well under way!
