Rate my seeing

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi Everyone...

There has been frequent mention of seeing, and how good/bad it was while we are imaging. There was a link to the Mt. Wilson seeing scale last week as well.

While I was imaging yesterday, I grabbed 50 frames centered on AR1471 and put together an animation of the 10 second time span. These are raw JPG files saved off the camera...and shows the seeing conditions fairly well. I appears that the images are rather 'dull' in the YouTube posting...the original clips has much betetr contrast.

This was through the LS80T/DSII/B1800Ha and 2x teleconverter, images captured aroudn 11am local time so daytime heating was starting to become more prevalent. Follow the YouTube link below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj48TNtx ... el&list=UL

I would say this is a bit better than my typical conditions, but to me far from 'good' seeing....maybe a 3/5. How would you rate this to your usual conditions...I'd be interested to hear.

2/5. Im afraid that post processing would be a challenge on this image! You never see any super sharp moments popping up.

Hi all...

So far we are all in the same ball park...2-3/5, on the btter side of my average.

I may get some better conditions in a month or two, but the majority of the farmland in many tens of miles around me is just beeing seeded, so little green ground cover to soak up the sun.

Thanks for your input and ratings.

2/5 I guess. My images from saturday were done in conditions very similar to this so don't rule out post processing the avis ;)

In my book that's first class, that lovely ripply wave. I would say that perhaps not on perfect focus though. I hate the horrible shakes and boiling yuk, I'd be rally happy if I had this.

Hi

To me there is no boiling and very little distortion between frames if these are RAW images and I would place it at Grade 2 and edging towards a 1 as I know that videos can be less sharp when presented on youtube a problem I have with my work. Registax 6 would make a very sharp image.

Hope this helps

Hi all...

I grabbed the images for this clip right after the processed image for the same AR in my May 6th posting. The processed sequence was from 300 frames, best 80% run through Registax and I would say the result was quite good.

The Ha is pretty forgiving of the seeing...CaK is a whole different story!

Thansk for all your input.

Brian between 1&2 its hard for me to compare as I always operate at higher mag with a slightly larger aperture.I,ll try to get a snapshot of my seeing .

Hi Derek...

If you can show a clip of your seeing I think it would be good.

I was mainly checking to see how good or bad others thought it to be...and looks like it was in line with my own assessment of 2-3. I usually am not this steady :(

I would rate it as 2/5. I usually get much better seeing conditions. It can vary a lot (WL, CaK and Ha). It seems to be slightly out of focus.

best regards

Pedro and Alexandra...

You have both mentioned the focus looks soft...and I agree the vidoe clip does not look the best. It seems to have lost contrast and has a bit of a soft look. The frames were captured as JPG, then the whole clip was re-sized from 1280x1024 to 640x480 in Windows Movie Maker to get the posted video. It lost a lot of detail in the process.

The processed image for that same region/same focus was posted with the May 6th images. Please check and see if you feel full resolution image looks ok after processing.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian

thanks for sharing. That is what I see most of the time and I would rate it also 2 out of five. So we are in the same boat ;)
