Solar Shield
Looking for DIY ideas for sun/solar shields you use when observing. Pictures would be appreciated! Thank you.

Re: Solar Shield
I usually image from my back deck & hang a towel or blanket from the roof to block the direct Sun from me while viewing or imaging. I am sure this post will provide you with many solutions.
Re: Solar Shield
here is what i use for my workstation, i think portable, positionable umbrellas work great
if you mean what you use to visually look without getting roasted, here is my extremely high tech device, i am selling these if you are interested

Hi Alexandra;
Couldn't help but notice the obligatory refreshing beverage, for when outside in the hot sun ...
Cheers,
Bill

Re: Solar Shield
What a fantastic set up Alexandra, anti aircraft placements never looked so good , now the black brolly I may have to get.
For the OP I place my laptop on my garden seat & kneel on the floor with a dark brown towel over me ed, I know I am cheap ........but it works a treat.

Re: Solar Shield
Very true. Was slightly windy today and did notice slight vibrations. Nothing bad enough to warrant removing it for visual, but for AP it's a no go.Montana wrote:I'm just warning you, if it is windy it will wobble your scope no end

Here is my latest attempt at trying to see my screen and it seems to work.

LMAO
here's a funny statistic:
amount spent on just solar telescopes (not mounts because i can't estimate value) in 4 pictures ~12-15k
amount spent on materials to make viewing comfortable <200$ (although i may be undervaluing the towel)

Re: Solar Shield
After reviewing the above images showing how others toil in the sun to obtain their images, I feel particularly fortunate to work from a fixed setup with a roll-off roof. Our three solar scopes are aligned along the opening edge of the roll-off roof allowing for shade over the work station and remaining observation deck. This would not have been possible with a dome. The following images show the scopes (right to left: the Lunt 60 PTDS on iOptron mount, the TS 115mm APO triplet with Baader Herschel wedge mounted on an Orion Atlas-Pro and, my 8" Solar Newton on an EQ6). Further to the left, the 12" Newtonian on a split-ring mount can be seen in part. The work station is in the shade and has ready access to the remote focusing, different hand pads, printer, etc as well as a small refrigerator stocked with ample cool refreshing beverages. I really love working here.
Cheers,
Bill
