Help needed for plane transit

Post by Montana »

I have plane transit :)

However Registax 5 and 6 no longer work for my avi files, I have no idea why, it just says 'File cannot be loaded'. So I have no way of extracting the single image or making a gif.

Can anyone tell me why Reg 5 or 6 won't recognise an avi captured in Firecapture 2.3 or can anyone tell me how I can extract a single image or make a short avi or gif from my avi file?

The hubby tried to download Virtualdub but it crashed the computer so I need another suggestion (don't suggest this one).

I have used "Free video to JPG Converter", a freeload download to save individual frames but beware the adware. Just tried it again and it works easily with a Firecapture file

Thanks Robert, it has done it, you can only choose to extract all the frames rather than just one but at least I have them in jpeg format but not TIFF or BMP like Registax. I still don't understand why Registax no longer works anymore, I prefer it for prominence processing.

Hello Alexandra,

nice capture. I NEVER use AVI files. There are soo many flavours of image compression and storage inside the AVI envelope that you always risc compatibility issues. I do all captures in SER format (yes the file will be bigger, you can zip it later, but at least the information in the file is what the camera caught). For viewing ther is the very good and useful (free) SER player. You can process, export single images, or sequences. Much better than struggling with AVI. https://sites.google.com/site/astropipp/ser-player
SER files are supported in AS!2, Avistack, Registax ...

Rgrds,

Paul

And with the SER file you could get exact time of the transit (frame by frame)

Absolutely beautiful capture Alexandra.
I tried to view it on the face book link but it wouldn't load for me there.
I went directly to Flickr without issues. I suspect my Apple IPhone may be the culprit.
Regardless, very nicely done.

Great solar jet transit Alexandra

I use AVI and SER files and I do not see much difference for FD imaging. I use windows movie maker to get the final video before sending it to youtube (jet transits). For animated gifs I use UnFREEz

best regards

Hello Pedro,

don't know if that 4GB size limit still exists for AVI. In standard AVI it does, but new software seems to use tricks to get around that. But might not always be "portable". Still have some older AVIS that don't play on all my computers (missing codec, invalid format ...) Here is were SERPlayer does a nice job. Mark the frames you need, export directly to AVI, Animated GIG, jpeg, tif ... (and if needed do a quick gamma correction).

Regards,

Paul
