Disc, AR2662, Proms | Quark & PST | HA & WL | June 15th 2017

Post by MalVeauX »

Hey all,

I had about 2 hours of clear sky this morning for the first time in 6 days and happened to not be working. Now, it's all clouded over, thundering, and rain coming. The major proms from the past few days have calmed down, but they're still there, so I was able to get some decent data on the larger prominence areas in higher resolution. The two surface spots are fairly nice sized, and I was able to grab them in two wavelengths of light (656.28nm & 540nm) to compare. Seeing was pretty bad, but lucky imaging helps, managed to get the convection cells to show up decently in white light.

High Resolution Kit:

Celestron Omni XLT 120 (1000mm F8.3) Refractor (with GSO 2" Linear Bearing Focuser, Dual Speed)
80mm Extensions x 2
Baader 2" UV/IR Cutter (ERF) threaded onto inner most extension into focuser
  • (HA) Quark Chromosphere for 656.28nm wavelength (hydrogen alpha)
  • (WL) Baader Astro Solar Film Filter & Baader Solar Continuum Filter for 540nm wavelength (white light) + GSO ED 3x Barlow
ASI174MM
(GSO 2" 0.5x Focal Reducer used once for wider FOV)
500 frames captured per video
31 frames stacked for surface
101 frames stacked for prominences (to reduce noise factor by 10)

Full Disc Kit:

Coronado P.S.T. (400mm F10) Refractor
ASI174MM with ASI Low Profile Nose (reaches prime focus without any modification)
500 frames captured per video
101 frames stacked (to reduce noise factor by 10)
Single exposure for this one, prominences lifted in post and masked in
