Father's Day Solar with CPC925 and Combo Quark - June 18, 2017

Post by nickatnight »

Moved off the back patio and out to the grass finally. Also re-collimated the telescope. Seems to be performing better.

These were shot with Aries full aperture DERF, CPC925, Baader 3x telecentric, Combo Quark, .67 focal reducer, ASI174MM camera. Tried working with a little faster shutter @ 3-3.5ms, gain around 200, gamma lowest (except 100 for proms). Captured 4500 frames, stacked 600-1200. Processed with AS!3, AstraImage and Photoshop. Comments and suggestions welcome.

First a prom lift off I spotted happening on GONG Sunday morning, but it was pretty diffuse by the time I was set up and shooting...

These images are definitely getting better Nick! When you've stacked your movies if you open them back up in AS2/3 as an image it will give you a 'quality' reading, this is an easy and quick way to make sure you are post processing the best image possible.

Oh, yes! Nick's results getting better every time.

These images are all great. I especially like the latest (early morning) AR2662! Really sharp!

I would suggest to pick up a place where the grass only, without a ground. At least for a telescope itself
and in the direction to the sun - so, no warm smears will rise to the air and influent on the seeing.

Also, when you imaging prominences it worth to use TZ2 - you will have better contrast and faster fps = more good frames
to stack.

Lovely proms Nick. The detail in the spots is very impressive.
Best wishes,

Thank you everyone. It has been nice having solid improvements with this setup. Moving off the patio made a big difference, as it seemed a whole frequency of interference disappeared. Valery, I think I'll be better off planting some grass seed then moving the scope, otherwise I'll lose early Sun. The old trampoline I moved to put the scope there has to go, and it's what killed off the grass. Should have better conditions down there over time. The Baader TZ-2 is a good idea for proms. It's on my short list. Mark, I'll try out that quality reading. Didn't know you could do that with AS!2/3 and stacked images. Sounds useful, although the one or two really good captures often stand out.
