August 27th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I have finished processing the images captured on Sunday, and they are presented below. I used the same basic setup and sequence as the set form Aug 25th, but also added a set through the 4x Powermate. AR2672 continued to put on a great show and there were several active proms as well.

First are the full disk images, captured as follows:
Ha through the LS80T/DSII/B1200Ha + PGR Grasshopper Express (ICX674 chip), the second with a longer exposure to pull up the fainter proms:

WL through the iStar 150mm, f8 OTA/Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader Solar Continuum + ZWO1600MM:

A 3x Telextender was added ahead of the camera to get higher resolution images of the main AR's in WL and CaK, with the ZWO174MM:

The next set of images were taken through the CR-150/Baader ERF/3x Telextender/Quantum 0.45A + ZWO174MM Camera:

I swapped the Powermate out for the 2x Explore Scientific Telextender to increase the FOV, and shorten the exposures for the proms. All of the following were taken with this set-up:

I was pleased that this amount of detail came in at F16

There was a lot of faint details in several of the proms and I tried to do up composite images of some to show this:

I think this covers all the views I was trying to capture. An impressive day with the AR's and proms...and the good seeing continued on for this session. :)

Questions and comments are always welcome,

Brian

The best (IMHO) are the images taken with 4x PowerMate (this is F/32). They are really good. I'd make it a bit more contrasty to pop out some delicate details. With 3x tele-extender the images seems washed out and even more with a 2x tele-centric. Id' also try the combo of 2x + 3x telecentrics + 0,5x reducer which give you F/48 on the etalon = truly 0,5A bandwidth and F/24 on the camera = an optimum scale for IMX174 chip.

BTW What does it mean DSQ in the names of some images?

BTW2 What the QUANTUM version PE or SE ?

BTW3 Have you applied a flat field to the surface images?

Hi Valery...

Thanks for your comments...always appreciated!

I have always liked the f32 images with the Daystar, but fusing the 3x Telextender is a more friendly setup most of the time. A compromise between exposure and maximizing the filter potential. This session had much better seeing than have had in ages...probably since last September and I made us of the Powermate. I have a 5x Powermate that I have tried on occasion, but the seeing has not allowed this to work well. Another day with good conditions and I may try it again...always willing to experiment ;) For me, the 3x serves me well for most sessions.

Contrast is matter of personal preference and I usually prefer not to push it to far. The 2x shot certainly could use more, but I was more impressed how much detail came through at f16 (far form what the quantum was designed for).

Now, for the closing questions:
1 - DSQ is my abbreviation for Daystar Quantum in Firecapture (amplifier/scope/filter/time is used on most, but I had to set them up after upgrading the software and I see I have to edit a few so they are consistent).
2 - the filter I have is a SE version
3 - Flats are applied at capture, and I do use the Daystar tilt adjuster on the CMOS chipped cameras as well

Hi Brian,

1. PowerMate 5x does not really work as the telecentric. Significantly worser than PM 2x + PM2.5x and worser than PM4x.
But may be in your case it will work fine?

2. Can you show the image with Quantum SE when no flat field applied? Better somewhere near the center of the sun disk?
I am curious how good the uniformity of the DayStar etalons of SE versions (how their SE are better than their Quarks' etalons).

3. Can you, please, explain me how do you do the flat procedure at capture? May be via PM.

Thanks for advance.
