September 10th Loop Prom

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

I was fortunate to have sun both days of the weekend, but the loop prom that began to form late Sunday morning was what made the whole session a one of a kind experience.

The attached image shows a precursor jet that I imaged, and when I came back to image the area a half hour later there was a very bright knot starting to form. It slowly started to develop into a loop which is shown in the first 3 images in the sequence. I had to leave the scope for a few hours, but when I came back the details in the loop structure were very impressive. I have many more images, but these are the better of the lot...seeing was not the best in the morning session and worse by the late afternoon final image in the sequence.

The images were taken with the Daystar Quantum (0.45A) filter. The CR-150,f8/4x Powermate scope was used to capture the first 3 images and the final image in the set was taken through the 25cm Meade ACF SCT/Daystar full aperture ERF at prime focus (f10). Change of scope to test out the re-collimated optics and only scope that had a clear view to the west ;) As a result the image scale is not uniform, and had I more time I would try to assemble a little better :?

I will post the balance of the weekends images as I get them processed...very busy at work again and limited time to work on them.

Questions and comments are always welcome,
Brian

Hi, Brian

Great work on the sequence.

For the longest time, the very bright spot that produced the loop prom did nothing except mess up my exposures for that region. It was extremely bright.
I waited as long as your third image above and took some images but then the sky became so hazy that I decided to pack up. I had been there about 3 hours and it was an amazing session in which the best seeing happened from about 10:45 to noon when I did most of my imaging. I've posted all the images from this session.

Rainer, Dave and Lou...

Thanks for your comments :bow It was pretty impressive to watch it grow over time.

Lou...I saw your post earlier today, but hadn't had a chance to reply. Looks like we were imaging at the same time in the morning yesterday. Our skies stayed clear until sunset, but the seeing was not the best 3-5 during most of the morning image capture...a few 2's and as bad as 7 on occasion :?

The detail in the loops are superb, they are so bright and crisp :bow :hamster:
I think I have seen loops only once before but they were quite faint with the PST. You are very lucky indeed to witness this, I have missed the whole spot development and flares and now they are gone.

Mark, Stu, Franc, and Alexandra...

Thanks fro your comments, they are always appreciated :bow

I was fortunate to catch it, and in its early formation was hoping it would produce a loop structure. I have only ever caught a few that were pretty much done...most of the time I missed them by days or hours. I nice addition to the weekend.
