Possible damage on BF600?
I inspected my blocking filter 600 the other night and found this disturbing blemish on the glass.
This doesn't look good. I contacted Lunt but still haven't heard back from them so I thought I would share the problem here.
Anyone seen this before?

Looks like "crud". Had this problem a few years ago and Rikk, at Lunt was very helpful o in offering to replace the BF. Meanwhile, I tried cleaning the BF using rust remover and, it worked.

Here's my "crud".
Here's the Rust Gel - aka Naval Jelly.
Here's an image before the "crud".
Here's an image with the "crud".
Here's an image when the "crud was cleaned off with the Rust Gel.
Apparently, this is a common problem. Since the "tint" in the BF is through and through, the outside is almost indestructible.
Hope this helps.

That is not the Blocking Filter I guess, but the "blue glass" on the side of the prism that is facing the telescope. If it is still under warranty you can contact Lunt. They will replace it. Or let them send you a new one, it is very easy to install.

Actually, it is the IR/UV "blocking filter". Try my suggestion out - what have you got to lose other than waiting for the replacement to arrive ? Trust me, I've been there and done that. Remember, it will happen again in the future.

Re: Possible damage on BF600?
Hi Bill,
According to Lunt:
This is the BG Filter – the Schott-designed BG (Blue Glass) filter. This filter is also created to absorb any residual IR.
But yes, your suggestion is what I myself would do. Contact Lunt and get a new one. And in the meantime clean it like you describe.
Bart.

Semantics aside, the important issue is what to do to keep imaging. I live in the Caribbean where shipping is always an issue in terms of time/delays as well as keeping the customs folks happy. Pleased to hear that you agree.

Re: Possible damage on BF600?
I also had that happen and Lunt sent me a new BG glass.
Mine clouded over after I had left the scope outside on a high heat and humidity day. At the time, I wondered if condensation was the cause of the crud.

Re: Possible damage on BF600?
I received my replacement glass in the mail, it took months for Lunt to send it.
Just need to swap it over.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. It was solved by soaking the ITF in baader cleaning fluid (B3400)
See below, before and after cleaning
