Cameras for solar imaging

Post by Frank Porter »

On Thursday i shiuld receive my Lunt 60/50 presure tuned DS scope frim OPT. What do you think about the TWO AS I 178 for $399?? I have a Baader Hyperion Mark 4 and a Powermate 2.5x. If used together, will the entire solar disk be visable in the EP & imaged with the above camera?
Without breaking the bank, what other recommendations do you have?

Hi Frank,

You can try the FOV calculator at http://www.12dstring.me.uk/fovcalc.php to check it out

How are you planning to image - prime focus or eyepiece projection?

Point Grey Research Chameleon 3 gives a full disk with LS60, (model with 3.1Mpx sensor). I have one and like it, (prime focus).

You really need to be doing prime focus. Eyepiece projection is not the best way...

You have to go for a global shutter camera.
Browse for rolling shutter and global shutter, related to solar imaging.

Alex can you elaborate on the reason for global vs rolling shutter. I notice that the camera I was looking at from ZWO has a rolling shutter (ZWO ASI 178) If I go with a Cameleon 3 what adapter is needed to attach to the Lunt 60MM scope. Mine has the 1.25" 1200 BF diag. Sorry about all the questions.

The sun surface, especially at high resolution is very unstable.
You better have to capture in "one shot" a frozen frame, rather than reading one row form the camera chip, while the next row continues capture a moving detail.

The most common representation of this is by making a picture of a cooling fan:
