25 November prom and filament

Post by Davidm »

Got a rare chance to do some imaging this morning. I tried using a new bit of kit, a Siebert Optics 4x barlow to get a close up of the main prom. I am pretty happy with this for the LS152, at least for days with the best seeing as I think it would be about the highest magnification I could go to (3600 mm focal length). I cranked the gamma higher than normal, which kills the limb but brings out the detail in the prom (I haven't worked out how to get the fine details in faint proms without doing this). I also got brightening in the centre of the image, which I think means I need to re-blacken the inside of the camera nosepiece to stop reflections of the magnified image off the sides, but I think the 4x barlow will be worth it in certain circumstances.
The second image is a mosaic of the large filament using a 3x barlow,

Nice job.
I got a quick peek at the Sun between clouds yesterday (high winds too) and your pictures are better than I was seeing through the telescope
