Dec 13th Sunrise

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

The sun has been an elusive target here lately, and the weather has turned rather winter like (weather forecast was right for a change  ).

The skies cleared here over night and I got up early to blow the snow drift off the driveway before heading to work. It was a beautiful view of the moon and Jupiter in the twilight skies. As dawn approached sun dogs and pillars began to form in the -23C air...you could see the frost suspended in the air once the day brightened enough to see them.

This view persisted until the better part of 10am local time, and drew a lot of attention from those who don't normally pay much attention to the sun and its surrounding area. The first pic was taken with my cell phone soon after sunrise and the second was taken with the Canon 60D/14mm lens about an hour later after digging out the observatory to retrieve the camera! The cell phone pic has a reflection of the solar disk near the top of the arc.

This was probably one of the best shows of this kind I have seen...just wish the optics were a bit cleaner ;)

If it stays clear we may have a repeat on Thursday morning...supposed to be colder than this morning.

Fantastic show, Brian, very nicely captured. I never observed directly this phenomenon and I am glad you are sharing this with the group.

Hi Alexandra...

Glad you enjoyed this view...it was an amazing sight and I was really surprised how long it persisted.

Social media was full of reports and pics. I was hoping to have caught it a few times as the sun rose higher, but it had cleared off before I could get a look outside again. It was a bit colder again this morning...close to -25C...but the ice crystals were absent so just a cold sunrise!!!

Thanks Eric...

Another clear day, but no atmospheric phenomenon on the go and too cold to be trying to image with the short lunch hour observing window.

Hi Derek...

Sorry to hear about the situation with your parents...hope everything goes well with them.

Interesting to see that the school has a bee keeping course...quite impressed actually. The school boards here have nothing to do with involving students in anything ag based...though the majority of teachers have no problem continuing to promote personal bias and false 'facts' that swirl around the internet. Your son should make an excellent candidate go through the course...maybe have the teacher consult for practical expertise ;)

Scott is home after his final exam after his first semester at U of Guelph...seems to have enjoyed the past 4 months, will see how the marks come out once they are released.

Thanks for the Christmas wishes. I have a hard time picturing a hot, green landscape for Christmas  Please extend my wishes to your family for a great holiday season as well.

Brian

Brian in this case I’m the teacher as it’s a school based traineeship with a consultancy firm setting some type of framework. At least my tertiary skills will be of use here more so to keep the training modules relevant to real life.
