Xmas Eve Day Sun and some Scenery

Hi everyone...

We finally managed to have a clear day today and a day off work too...so I took advantage of the opportunity to do some imagign before heading to my parents for the first go at Christmas festivities.

Seeing was reasonably good with the -8C that was offered, but with the time limits I limited to working with the LS80T/B1200Ha solar scope, double stacked with the LS75FHa front mount etalon. The first image is the full disk composite of separate disk and limb exposures. It was nice to see an upswing in activity!

I added a 3x barlow ahead of the camera to capture some higher resolution frames of the disk and limb features. I made mosaics across the disk showing the features, and crated a composite of thse images in monochrome, inverted, and colorized palettes. The first spans the area just south of the solar equator:

The second covers the disk north of the equator, with AR2692 as the main disk feature:

This post covers the session form today. We have had a lot of cloud and snow in the past couple of weeks so I made a panorama around the observatory when I was finished imaging:

With all the cloud lately there have been few opportunities to see any stars...but our neighbors solved that problem by lighting their Christmas star which is mounted atop their silo:

Questions and comments are always welcome.

Seasons Greetings and best wishes from my family and I to everyone here for a Merry Christmas.

Take care,
Brian

Brian:
Super solar shots, though this is the first time I see the nearest star resolved so well.
Seasons Greetings to you and family.
Best wishes,
Eric.

Hi Rainer...

Thanks for your comments...always appreciated :bow

My panorama has a lot more snow if I were re-take it in he morning, as we have had a lot of snow through the night and Christmas Day. The winds have picked up and a lot of drifting snow. A lot of Canadian who don't like the snow head south for the winter to escape it...some of my wife's family he in Mexico for the winter.

Alexandra and Mark...

Thanks for your feedback and Christmas wishes...very much appreciated :bow

Mark...your Icelandic adventures look great from the aurora pics you are posting. They much be very impressive to show that well with the moonlight.

Alexandra, we have not had a lot of (or any) snow at Christmas in the last 10 years so I am happy to have the snow...just a 'natural' state for nature in my mind. We have had a damn cold week too..-30C a couple of mornings and the daytime high has been in the -20's too. The saving grace has been the relatively calm winds...we'd be in whiteouts with blowing snow and the cold would seem 10x worse in the wind. Joked with some customers today that it was nice to have a warn day for a change...the fact it was still -17C puts it into perspective  The cold weather has brought clear skies but work has not allowed any time to do solar work despite the cold.
