Sol from the 16th of February 2018.

Post by eroel »

Hello:
Today before lunch I used the 102mm f/9 Meade with a CaK PST mod, and also the Solarmax 90-DS-BF30. It was a clear and sunny day when I started, then it got a bit hazy but it was O.K.
After lunch I did go to the office and when back home, I went up to the roof observatory to start processing the images and suddenly the seismic alarm horns started to howl and a voice announced that a quake was comming up, so my wife shouted me and down I went to the dedicated spot in the garden where we all gather when the earth shakes.
It was a 7.5 Richter scale earthquake with an epicenter 350 Km from home, it took around 60 seconds after the alarms sounded and then it began shaking. it did not feel as strong as the one we had in September, so after it calmed down we got inside the house again. At this hour, there has been more that 150 replicas at the epicenter, all of lower intensity.
Well, after the experience and knowing through the news that no one was hurt and that there were not many damages, I did did a quick processing of the photos taken at noon.
Thanks for looking and have a nice and not shaky weekend,
Eric.

I'm glad you are all safe Eric.

It's amazing the technology we have in place that in this case you had the warning. Solar disks in an earthquake, impressive!

Hi Eric...

Good to hear that you managed to avail any major damage and by the accounts on the news there was not a lot of widespread damage with this one. Surprised considering the magnitude stated...also good to hear there were warnings.

The solar pic is very sharp as well. Great work under the circumstances :bow

Hi Eric: yes I will be at NEAF. I usually go on Saturday, as I think some of the best lectures are on that day.

We should meet again like last year and tour the show. I hope Brian and others from the group will be there.

Brian ?

Stu, Mark, Pedro, Brian and Franco:
Thanks again for caring.
BTW, it is incredible to see what happens when the Seismic Alarms all over the city and on many other cities in different states, start howling and announcing that there is an Earthquake of more than 6 in the Richter scale comming. All buildings are evacuated quickly and there are dedicated people with a bright colored vest that organizes all the people out of the buildings in determined safe places. The traffic stops and people get out the cars and gather in places where no electrical cables posts or something that can fall down could harm them. People starts to help other citizens that get nervous and try to keep streets clear. Soon you see a lot of Police helicopters going around, you start getting messages in your celular phone of what is happening, all radio stations and TV stations start giving details and instructions in how to proceed. After the event, citizens start to control the stopped traffic, so it can start going on, this because most of the time you have electrical failures and there are no traffic lights working.
If nothing happens as this last quake, then the normal way of living keeps going on, just with the awareness that some quake repetitions could develop. (The last quake has now more than 900 replicas.
Mexico has a gigantic net of detectors along the Pacific coast and all over the Republic, so normally when the alarms sound, the quakes are plus 6 in the Richter scale and you have a minute or so to take cover. (Most quakes have their epicenters more than 300 Km away from the city, so the quake waves take some time to get to the cities).
Is it nice to see that we have developed a quake culture due to dedicated drills and an incredible citizen civic behavior.
Best regards to all.
Eric.
