Sun 28.02.18 (New Camera -- New beginnings?)

Post by Macavity »

Despite the excitement of a *working* Frankenscope, my images always
seemed "somewhat lacking" (to me)! Part of the problem, a slightly
"dodgy" (uneven pixels) DMK41 chip and the occasional Newtons Rings! :|

The Camera is now replaced by the (so far) excellent Chameleon 3.
So a first "worthwhile" session? Many settings are still "experimental"!

The seeing was (as ever?) "not great" (thin high cloud... or contrails): :P

The first (combination) image, is from my default Lunt 50 single stack:

The Frankenscope uses a stopped-down Skywatcher ST120(!) (D=86mm)
+ Baader 90mm D-ERF; Antares 3x Barlow nosepiece (for 2x) f~1200mm

The Camera is now a Chameleon, but the rest is mostly unchanged! :)

My "quick" processing method (AS!2 + Registax 6) produces images like:

If I try REALLY HARD (and use ImPPG) I can produce images like this:

BUT THIS has set me wondering! Could I do BETTER? Skill (sic!) aside, I
wonder about the "weakest link" here? On limited budget, I could move
from the *central 86mm of an ST120* to the FULL aperture of an ED80?

I have NO idea how (stopped down) "ST 120 Achromat Frankenscopes"
perform at HA wavelengths. If I use an ED80, I lose a few millimetres
(86 -> 80) but the aberrations might just be (a lot) less... or better?
The whole setup feel a tad less like it will *end up on the floor*!!!

Solar Minima are not the best time... But ain't getting any younger!

The last image is the way to go, ImPPG every time (don't use Registax). These are cracking images :bow :bow :hamster:

Thanks Alexandra! TBH, I'm not even sure I can even emulate the default
sharpened output from AS!2... with Registax...

ImPPG has a nice property that it can "highlight" different radial zones! ;)

I suspect there might be a ED80 with "my name on it" eventually. I only
have an ED66 for white light, and it might be nice to liberate the ST120.
If it warms up in the UK :o I might return to the "dark side" (visually!). :D

Don't use the sharpened output from AS2!

Nice results, agree with using IMPPG, it's all you need in one program ;-)
