March 15th in Ha

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

I finally managed to get some time to view the sun over my lunch hour today...it has been over a month since the last session (work, holidays and poor weather to blame).

The activity was very low, with a few smaller proms and filaments and one small bright spot near the mid disk. The images below are through the LS80T/B1200Ha solar scope double stacked with the LS75FHa front mount etalon. The first is a disk/limb composite:

The second image is a longer exposure to pull up some of the fainter tendrils associated with the proms (disk blanked out):

We have some clear weather forecast for the weekend, so I'm hoping that more activity develops. The Peterborough astronomy club is planning to visit Saturday and do some solar observing.

Very nice views with good detail, Brian. Yes, the weekend looks good and sunny: let's hope for good seeing too.

Thanks Franco...

This will be the third year that I host the club members for solar observing, and so far we have had clear skies each time. Activity will be lacking this session through by the looks of it.

A few members have WL filters and one as a Coronado 60 solar scope, and the club has a PST. I always put up the LS80 and one of my refractors with the solar wedge so that people can see the different filter options. I may put the CaK filter on one for the small refractors and with a camera to add another option.

That sounds like a lot of fun, Brian. It is always rewarding when you can share your passion for the sun with others. I never tried CaK visually.
How is it ? What is the color of the sun with the CaK filter, visually, and do you see the prominences ? I know you see the sunspots.

Franco...

CaK visually is a challenge for most people...the eye isn't very sensitive to that short a wavelength so a camera shows it best on screen.

As we age the cornea yellows and ruins what little ability we had to see anything. Younger people can see more, and after cataract surgery the new clean lens in the eye makes it much more visible. I had cataract surgery 2 years ago and that eye show the CaK much like the images posted here. The un-touched eye only has a faint, dim blur where the sun should be

Thanks Rainer...I was glad to manage to get some imaging in after a long drought ;)

I'm hoping the wannbe spot puts on more of a show for the weekend.

Thanks for your comments Eric...always appreciated :bow

I should be at NEAF most of Saturday so we can all plan a place and time to try and meet up as we get closer and see who else plans to attend.

Derek and Pedro...thanks for your feedback :bow

Pedro, I hope the rain clears out for you and the weather returns to more normal conditions.

Derek...we had a good week away but no astronomy with the full moon and limited solar activity had me leaving the little solar scope home. It would be good to see your milky way shots...the southern sky always looks amazing. Jupiter was blazing when I was up to wood on the fire this morning...almost went out to grab a few wide field pics but I opted to sty by the fire

Nice capture Brian! Glad you got that little emerging flux region. Sounds like fun at your club meet.

Mark, Alexandra, Bruce, and Stu...

Thanks to each of you for your comments on the images...always appreciated :bow

We had clear skies for the solar session yesterday, but a cold north-west wind kept everyone close to the garage where we were out of the wind. We had a couple of PST's a 60mm Coronado and my solar equipment to use on the sun. It was a very bland view in WL, but the Ha scopes did show a few proms as well as the bright flux regions and a couple of filaments.

Alexandra...syrup production is a holding pattern right now. It was warm enough to get a run while I was in the Dominican but it has been cold ever since. I have the bush tapped and all the equipment set up...now mother nature needs to do her part ;)
